So I'm installing the Doug Thorley headers and having a custom exhaust built to match the 2.25" collectors. It doesn't make sense to me to choke the whole system down with the stock cats. Magnaflow's OEM Grade cats are 2.25" and come with a warranty where I can supposedly get my money back if they throw codes. That said, per their recommendations I need 2 per side so 4 total. Before I drop that kind of coin, I figured I'd see if anyone here can report success for failure with them. I found an old thread where at least one guy said they worked, but no long term updates.

This is the part in question: Magnaflow OEM Grade Cat

I have not, but now I'm interested. My 2001 is emissions-exempt starting next year, so while cats seem like "a good idea" in general, for me if they just met emissions requirements this year I'd be set. I wonder if there will be any noticeable benefit with going to a larger exhaust, especially if you're not doing some kind of tune to take advantage of it.

I'm running [in the process of setting up] a Holley Terminator ECU on an LS and have found that some people have successfully used them on a lot of other engine applications (including at least one 1UZ), makes me wonder how difficult it would be to run the 2UZ on one and how much benefit there would actually be.

I used them on my 80 last fall. Good so far.

Used them in an amg when I hit road debris. No issues, perfect fit for the section.

The problem with running without cats is that the codes disable the VSC. This may or may not bother you, but my wife would like all the traction controls. You can always clear them with a reader, but they eventually come back. I'm dealing with that now on my 03' since it currently has the Magnaflow universal cats (cue sad trombone).

As far as any noticeable benefit from a larger exhaust past the headers I don't really have any data, but it makes sense that you should maintain diameter past the collectors. According to some posts on this forum supposedly the DT headers are one of the few mods that will give a little power bump so I figured why not maximize their potential? I guess I'll see with my finely-calibrated butt dyno once I get the headers installed.
