Anyone see an issue? Split rims and 255/85s?

I am finalizing my wheel/tire choice and wanted to run it by you all.

I am interested in running a 255/85/16 tire and want a steel rim... I like the ability to replace/patch tires in the field and have been looking at split rims as an option.

BFG says that 6.5 is the narrowest rim for the KM2s but most splits are 5.5. Should I start looking for another rim? Get these widened? Any other issues you all see? They are being mounted on a BJ44 with 60 axles.

Thanks!

I see lotsa guys running the 33x10.5"s on stock 15" steelies here on MUD. 255/85 is a 9" wide????, dunno.

I haven't done it but will likely do the 255/16 splits at some point.

255 is a 33+ inch by 10 inch tire...

I want to go with 16's for the ability to run E rated tires of desired, and the splits for self repair ability. I will be loading the rig up for some expeditions so load, fuel economy and handling will trump flexy sidewalls for real crawling.

@awl - I am drooling over your work with that 42... if you ever want to come and help a brother out on a 44, just let me know!

Tubless tires are easier to fix for a puncture using a self amalgamating corded plug and needle. You don't have to pull them off the vehicle to effect a repair. Just a thought........

Yeah, but its nice having a tube to replace, and the ability to patch a tire as well. The other thing is if a tire gets destroyed and I need to move tires from one rim to another in the field, the splits make a lot if sense.

Don`t expect good milage with splits.

They are a very heavy rim, and add to that the wieght of the tube and liner.

I have no hard data on this, but I get worse milage on the highway with the splits and 7.50/16s than I did with my wagon wheels and 33-10.50s.

Are they much heavier than say an Oem 16" non split?

I wouldn't run 10" wide tires on 5.5" splits because of the safety issue. These 7.5LT-16 are just perfect size on mine. I don't think wheel weight is an issue with cruisers 'cause they made to crawl!

I don't know where you are going but in my travels in Central America and West Africa I have yet to find it hard to have a tire patched when mounted on a standard rim.

I'm off grid, way off grid, six hours from the grid, and they still fix tires with a patch locally if I insist on it (which I do so the cords don't get damaged in the plugging process).

No splits for me, thanks!!

The main issue is to watch for j rim or double jj rim. The height of the sidewal of the tyre is diferent at the piece thats locks up at the rim. I don't think a normal bf goodrich wil fit on a split (jj) rim.

I just installed them on my cruiser and they look great. I beleive JohnnyC has some on his rigs? I dont have pics at the time but I went from 235/85-16's which were a little to skinny for my taste and then went to 33x12.5 and were to wide and modern and they went with 255/85-16's and love the look

Rob, Where did you get those from?

Charles, I know of your travels and if you don't need splits, I doubt I will! More to think about.

Kevin, good to know as fuel efficiency is one of my 'things' and I would be disappointed if my wheel selection affected it significantly.

I wouldnt run split rims, just get some tyrepliers and some heavy duty normal rims.
Possibly end up lighter, no tubes to mess about with...

Most repairs you can plug, way easier then replacing a tube!!
Biggest ive seen on tojo split rims is 235 and that looked fat on them rims,255 on standard splits- MMMMM no thanks.
Split rims are very heavy too.

Split rims are cool because the cruisers come with them. The idea of them is sweet say if you lived somewhere extremely remote. Though the idea of toting around tire tools, tube and such isn't that appealing.

So I have a set of 33x10.5x15s now... should I just stay with them? Would the 255x85x16 do better with load than the 15s would?

I think that off road 255/85/16 could be slightly better, only cause they are a inch or so taller, the sidewall height is about the same, so all things being equal they probably carry weight just as well as your 33s with similar air pressure...

I have 255/85r16's on oem split rims....Absolutely no problems with going to this size

I have gone thru a set of BFG MT's and Toyo M-55's and currently running Cooper Discoverer ST's

BFG and Toyo were right on about 10.3" wide x 33" tall

the coopers are a tad narrower at just under 10" x 33" tall

been running this set-up (255's and splits) for years

I do like the look of those rims, kind of like old school. I don't use them but, did know a guy who used them. He said, Got to be very careful with a split rim. Dosen't really happen offen, if you off road and bottom out or slam that wheel into something hard as a rock, they can pop causing that ring to go flying.
