Anyone runing additives in their fuel?

I had an Esso station owner try to tell me that all the diesel sold in the Lower Mainland of BC came from one local refinery. Sure. :rolleyes: As for the Flying-J, I think it is US diesel, as I have seen their tankers coming across the border here. My truck also doesn't like the US Chevron diesel straight up. It's got to have some mix added.

I am sure it must vary across the country. This came up because the pumps were down one day and the owner said that if I wanted the same fuel, go to petro down the road, they use the same dist. I will try to get shell to tell me what is in the premium deisel, might have fun trying to get it out of them :rolleyes:

A claimed 10% increase in fuel economy is not something the trucking industry would ignore. But $85 for 10 trucker size pills (only treats $200L each)???

For a small diesel, 10 pills run $41.10 plus tax and shipping. One pill only treats 70L of diesel. That would likely be around $5-6 (including taxes and shipping) for a 80-95L fill for me.

Think I'll stick with my cheaper snake oil. ;)
 
BTW, the worse diesel form my TD4.2 is Flying-J. Even the idle drops. It doesn't seem to have any negative impact on the LC diesel engines. All the club members fill there on their way into the interior.

Sorry, can you clarify this? Are you saying flying J diesel is good or bad? Are all Flying J's Shell dealers like my local one, and would they not use the same diesel as other Shell stations? I notice they only have one grade, and many of the other shell stations also have V-power diesel alongside the normal offering.
 
I am not saying that is good or bad. It is just an observation that my Nissan TD4.2 didn't seem to like Flying-J diesel without me putting in any additive. I have also filled up with Shell regular diesel and their premium diesel without additive and have not had the same experience. The only thing I can think of is that the Flying-J diesel is possibly coming from another refinery (likely in the US). I have not heard from any negative experiences with Flying-J diesel in their Toyotas from any of our club members.

I have not filled up there for some time now. No sense in me driving to Chilliwack to buy it at 119.9L when Superstore is the same plus a 3.5 cent/ liter store credit.
 
I thought the Flying-J was a card lock? If I would have known it's not then I would full up there instead of the husky next door.

The flying J local to me has both cardlock and retail fuel sales, and diesel there is cheaper than the other stations in the area, cheaper than regular grade gasoline too.

Yes it is a card lock. Some card locks are fuel or travel centers and also accept prepaid or credit cards. With Flying-J, it varies: http://www.pilotflyingj.com/loyalty/default.aspx. Abbotsford is card lock only. Chilliwack is also a retail fuel center. Kamloops is a full travel center.

The same goes for Petro Canada card locks. I like their travel center in Kamloops. All you need to get the perks of a professional driver is to be required to drive long distances for work. Good food, good service and I am on the road again. :steer:

I did a bit more research and found my TD4.2 requires a minimum 45 cetane. That probably explains why it does not like Flying-J fuel without some additive. Any idea what's the cetane rating required by the various Toyota diesels?

The EU has a minimum 51 cetane rating required for highway diesel. In the USA the cetane level varies between 42-45 and the minimum is 40. Although, California enforces a minimum cetane of 48 (47 for small refineries). Here's a list I saw on a couple other forums. I'm not sure how accurate or dated it is:

Funny, I have found the diesel at the 76 stations better than the Chevron. I guess a lot depends on where the crude comes from or where the diesel comes from. It isn't necessarily from your regional or even national refineries.

I am have been using Power Service Diesel Supplement + Cetane. I find that it does a very good job at cleaning injectors. I was ready to pull mine but tried this after a friend told me about it. All I did was add it to two tanks in double dose and the smoke was gone. Now I just add it for the lube and the extra cetane. For those in Canada, my local Cdn tire had a sale on the large container of Power Services (the Arctic formula and the Diesel Kleen formula). I'm waiting for the 2nd two to come in, but the 1st two were good to go at the store discounted 25% sale, and then using the manufacturer rebate to the store of $$3.00 per container. $19.99 minus 25%, minus $3.00 was $12.00 for the 96 oz. The link above has the coupons for both products and both sizes.

Yeah, even without the sale it's not too expensive. I've been using that stuff for the sole reason that it's sold at Crappy Tire, which means availability is good :)
