There have been some posts about pricing and theory in Line-x-ing one's roof but has anyone taken the plunge yet? My roof looks like hell with scratches from loading and unloading my rack. Thought this might provide some good protection and prevent a mess several years down the road.

I would love to see pics and hear some details from anyone who has done this!

I have 3 pays in April , so I'll keep you posted . Since the bigger lift , my 80 will not fit underground .. ironic that I've had to wait till spring to raise the cash for this job . The guy quoted me $200 CDN for Line-x'ing all the 'lines' that will remain after I remove my rack and rails . I may stick with a linear pattern , or I may get fancy .. we'll see . ;) . It will be black though , on moonglow pearl paint . That also includes UV protection .

Part of me is itching to tape off some crazy pattern/symbol/art and Line-x that . It'll mess with the folks in this building , as they look out over the front parking lot where I park . Them and the guys following me in the black choppers .. :D

I had the same problem with scratching up the roof when using my roofrack with my old SUV. I also have the factory roof rack on my 80 removed that as custom rust spots that need to be addressed. I was thinking about masking off the area where the rack was with nice rounded corners and having it chip coated then painted to match the color of my truck to protect the roof while using the aftermarket rack I'll get someday. I like the line-x idea but I don't want a big black "patch" up there. Can line-x be colored white?

I don't know about the line-x brand, but other bedliner goo can be colored any way you like. Superliner for one can be tinted.

I had never considered putting the stuff on the roof, but might do it depending on how the roof looks after I remove the OEM rack. I'll definitely wait until summer though...no need to roll through town with holes in the roof while it's rainin'.

I still have plans to tint and coat my entire truck in the stock two tone grey/charcoal.

I just have no money.

EDPA,
Line-X can be color matched to a most any color. If my rig was white I wouldn't want a blk "patch" either. What might be cool though is if you Linexed the whole upper area down to the rear window giving the car a two tone look. The linex can be applyed as thick or thin as you like, it's a great material. Best of luck.

white line-x will turn yellow in no time, the shop owner had a sample out in the sun, he said in 3 days it was yellowish looking. yes you can restore the color, but black will hold color longest. the owner said that black is the best.

Not to mention that they'll have it in the UV protected version by the drum full .. and will probably cut a better deal with you . If I were to go Moonglow Line-x , my cost would probably almost double .

Again , it has to be done neatly and tastefully .. and black should look just fine . You don't look up at the black roof rack and shudder , do you ?

Ty,

My pattern preferences for your roof, in descending order:

#1 - A Helicoptor "H" landing site pattern.
#2 - The Toyota Technical symbol.
#3 - The Toyota symbol.
#4 - A shape that resembles the Virgin Mary (would get you on CNN)

There are pics floating around of an entire truck that had been done (shot were taken in a garage IIRC). I think he was a customer of Christo's?

Cheers, Hugh

Thanx Doug ... thats the spirit ! Now if I actually had a diagram to scale that illuminated the various roof holes as well as the ghost outlines of the rack , I could get the creative juices flowing !
