Anyone know when I can get the rear drive shaft on my 60 extended? Preferably not too far north.

I pulled the h55 and put in the shorter 4 speed...

Thanks,
Luis

Why don't you just get a new one made for the 4 speed? You can probably get a used drive-shaft from Jason's CruiserYard.

I thought about getting one from Jason but would probably still need to be modified? When Randy swapped in the vortec, the h55 was moved forward about an inch or two. I know this cause he cut into the tranny hump to make room for the shifters. The h55 appears to be about 3" longer than the 4 speed on the rear side.

Drop it off at Austin Drivetrain. 35ish & 183, just to give you a sense of location

Scottys off airport. I had my 40 shaft done there. 385.9767

Inland along southbound 183 about half way between Lamar and IH35, took the shaft and new TEQ spiders. They cleaned, installed, balanced and painted for about $150

Second on inland. That's all they do

So what are you going to do with the h55?

Pat,

I pulled the h55 mainly to avoid damaging it since the Advance Adapter on my truck is the the incorrect part #. I know there is a market for these so I might sell it to get a new 700r4 & TC adapter from a guy out by dallas.

I love the h55 but in order to get the correct adapter it would cost me another $1500. I hesitate going automatic but am tired of messing with "clutch" issues. Still debating, but at least the h55 will not get damaged.

Any chance that you can make some money back by selling off that adapter that you do have?

The only negative I see with the 700r4 is TV cable setup, but you can do that.

Another option would be a NV4500 5-speed. You can get the Chevy version and just bolt it straight onto your V8. You'd still need an adapter for the t-case.

Make sure it is a K case. K cases are the thicker ones. You can also use an 80 tranny cooler that you can source from Jason's Land Cruiser Parts Emporium.

A new adapter is around $300, so maybe I can sell it for 1/2 or so?

What is the problem with the tv cable setup?

as for the nv4500, I read that I would need the chevy 4wd version.

The TV isn't all that bad. Since you already have a GM setup, it should be straight forward. It's when you use another engine like my Cummins that you have to fiddle with making a bracket for it with the correct geometry.

Yeah, you could sell it quickly for sure.

If I had a 60 that I thought the h55 was worth putting on I'd make you an offer! Sadly my 60s engine is pretty tired so the tranny isn't a priority.

I'm not getting what the big deal here is with the wrong bell housing.. There is no difference between the H41~42 or the H55 input shaft length or front bearing retainer other than having to grind out clearance ear issues when installing the H55 on the 4 spd housing (shown in the pink areas in the pic)... I have done this swap dozens of times without any issues...so WTF?? got any better explanation??

Grant,

the problem is not the bell housing but rather the Advance Adapter part that mates the h55 to the 5.3L Vortec. I guess, technically, it does act as the bell housing. The current AA part on my 60 is 712532 which is made for the fj40/55 with 5.3L & h41/42 (http://www.advanceadapters.com/products/pn-712532/). I talked to AA last week and they told me that the part above could be made to work on a 60 but that the correct part would be a Marks kit (http://www.advanceadapters.com/prod...ser-stock-4--5-sp-to-chevy-v8-conversion-kit/) which comes with a shaft extension. This would explain why on the current setup I have, the front shaft would not go all the way in and why the retainers would keep breaking.

I know that the h41/42/55 lengths are the same. The only reason I was going with the 4 speed was to avoid damaging the h55. For the moment, I am reinstalling the h55 since the threads on the 4sp are stripped and I could not secure the transfer case properly to it.

Hope this makes a little more sense.

Luis

I have that Marks kit (used) sitting in my parts room...
