Ehsan Tops

Just for clarification, you are not buying from PakTops, you are buying from Ehsan.

Noted!

I believe most refer to the Ehsan Tops as Pak Tops or Paki Tops because they are from Pakistan. I do understand the paktop.com is your site.

If you start importing tops from, say Venezuela or Columbia will you still call them Pak Tops?

May I suggest, VenTop or ColumTop.:cheers::)

Canvas covering for the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40

No. I actually recently bought FJ40tops.com.

Thats even better are you selling any tops at this time? I would like to see them, what price point are they selling for? Are you listed in the vendors market?

Who knows the email adress of paktops.com ?
On their site impossible to find any link about it ?

It is tough to believe that no vendor has taken this project on and can supply a reliable product. It seems that there is a definite need for these.

If there is anyone out there that can sell me a soft top (it will have to be sacrificed for templates....so it does not have to be in great condition), I will look in finding a supplier/canvas manufacturer who is up to the task.

No promises but I will seriously address the possibilities. I am always willing to throw another iron in the fire.

Seriously.

I think there is a meaningful opportunity for an entrepreneur here for two styles of tops:

1) a factory replica with bows

2) a non-factory replacement that fully folds down easily (like, dare I say, the newer J**ps). It could be designed in such a way that it doesn't make your rig look like a J**p. I really want one of these and have sketched up designs based on the way J**p TJs' tops work. I have no idea how to sew and could see it taking me a few years to make my own. Not sure I have enough patience, so I'll likely just settle with running a bikini top in the summer and parking the rig under cover on rainy summer days (which happen in seattle!)

Best of luck to you guys. It takes a lot of patience and even more capital to do both tops and bows.

Cost/ROI

Very simple as to why it is not being done commercially in the USA.

Bingo.

For the masses, the price would be too high. So to reduce the cost and appeal to a wider market, you look off shore and lose any control of quality and delivery.

I would beg to differ....

That would be the typical approach of your standard business mentality...the reality is that this would have to be done by someone willing to accept that it is an investment that would not receive instant gratification. The majority of boneheads in business need "instant gratification" because they don't have the money to begin with....so they aim to the masses and avoid the niches. Simply put....not the way Springtail was constructed.

It is my belief that whomever manages to produce and distribute this type of product will in the end have both the satisfaction of supplying a real need and also a fair profit to boot.

IMHO: There are multiple factors why this product does not flourish.

a) promises made but never fulfilled...what good is it to be #45 in line for something that will likely never be constructed.

b) Poor quality....not that this would stop many people here, many are willing to buy a piece of junk and would rework it the best they could.

c) Website tease....why have a website that has no product to sell??

There are simple tricks to getting a project like this off the skids.

1) No need for large volume orders

Initially, do it as locally as possible and find someone who can do it well. Make sure that you give them the lions share of the profit with the agreement that as orders increase...the price goes down.

If it is super successful....have a quality manufacturer do it overseas for volume discounts.

2) Don't reinvent the wheel...why would you even think of making bows when someone already makes a quality set.

3) Accept the fact that building a quality product is not going to be cheap and neither will the selling price. If it is a good product and your pricing reflects the effort put into it...customers will pay for it.

4) Not everyone will get what they want....probably one style (at first) and a couple of colors. Custom work jacks up the price and slows production. Seriously, I'd be happy just to find a friggen top.

No doubt it is a big project that others have not faired so well, but their efforts should serve as lessons for those who may follow the "cursed" path of FST :)

I am not saying that I can actually pull it off....just saying that I am willing to use my connections to try. Now if I can only find a damn top to cut up

You want to find a top? I saw one of spector's recently and was very surprised at how nice they are... The design itself is well thought out.
