My AC compressor is toast and I need it replaced. I am in SoCal and having a very difficult time finding someone competent to work on my 84 FJ60. I have had one shop work on it and they botched the job thinking it was only the clutch bearing. They released the vehicle WITHOUT testing the compressor engaged and their work did not fix a thing as it was the compressor itself that was bad. Insane!

After calling around to find someone who can do better work I have found that some can barely remember to call me back with a yes or no answer. Seems like the economy must be wonderful if they can just blow off potential customers.

Does anyone have someone they can refer to me? Thank you!

I used a shop in Burbank that did a good job on my 60, but there's got to be someone closer to you.

Are you up to removing and replacing the compressor yourself ? If yes, you can buy the proper Denso reman (OEM) w/ a new clutch here:

CoolStream

Ask for Rex (1972FJ55 on MUD). He'll get you what you need. Then take it to a shop to have the system evacuated and filled with refrigerant.

Spike...thanks for the info, but I'm not comfortable evacuating the system and taking it all apart. I need an AC shop so I can get it done right. Thanks.

Well, you could do what I did: I bought the reman compressor w/ new clutch, drier, new expansion valve and took it to a LC place in Canoga Park and said, "make it cold" ... I found out later they farmed it out to a place that charged me for installing the expansion valve, but did not , but the thing blows cold so that's what matters.

You could take it to Jim Dickey, in Torrance - that's the only place I know reasonably close to you.

Or, you could just Google A/C places in your area and go by the ratings. If you have the right parts, that's half the battle.

Good luck.

Yeah, I have had Jim do work before. Good guy. I've been Googling around me and nobody seems that eager to do the work! I'll keep searching and get it done. Thanks.

Found a shop to do the work. They already sourced a newly rebuilt Denso unit along with a new drying unit. I get to keep it with R12 :) Going in tomorrow!

It will be nice to have cold air and no chain-saw under the hood!

Mac's Radiator and Air Conditioning in Bellflower is doing the work.

If they are going to put an expansion valve in it ask them to cleam the evaporator coil good. Mine had a sweater on it. Really limits the air flow through it from the fan. Good choice on the R12 . . . cools much better than 134.

Details for those of us in the Valley?

I have had great luck with Auto Air Specialist in Montclair on Holt Boulevard. They happen to be a local A/C parts house as well as service center. They did my custom hoses for my TBI swap.
