Anyone find rear hatch gas struts cheap??

Just checked, and there's NO WAY the brackets will come off the struts. They're integrated with the bracket in a permanent way. You might want to email the sellor to confirm by having him personally pull one off the shelf and hold it in his hand and describe it to you. Then at least you can agree with him that you'll refuse the shipment so you won't be charged or have to mess with it.

I'll do that now and let you know what I find out! Thanks.

Haven't got here yet, but i will post pics as soon as they do. They have been shipped.

Another recent thread reminded me of this. Has anyone found any good solutions??

Doug,
I remember someone posting up about getting some from Napa and doing a little light drilling and the rivets and securing with screws and nylon washer. So the existing bracket can be retrofitted to new nonOEM struts. Search did not turn it up for me

These are parts of the ad on E-Bay. Hope this helps.

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy anything from this guy. Ripped me off! Does not even know what fits what. He sent a strut the same lenght, but no brackets. These have screw-on ball mounts on the ends. Buy new Toyota and be done with it.

Here is my recent post, in response to IDougs question about $$ for rear hatch struts from cdan. I will post up when I get the ones I ordered for the hood of my LX470.
https://forum.ih8mud.com/showpost.php?p=1321377&postcount=11
I ordered the LX470 hood struts from Mr. Lou's Stuff on Monday and got them today (wednesday). They came in a stout mailer tube via priority mail.

The original struts have ball joints on each end and the strut is not removeable from the ball studs, so you unscrew the stud on each end thereby removing the entire strut assembly. The new struts have two ball studs and washers that you put in place of the old ones, and then the new strut can be put in place and a clip secures the strut to the ball stud. So the new ones can be removed by simply pulling the clip out.

Can't say how the rear hatch struts would work, but at least they got these right. Their return policy says they will take returns, you just pay return shipping if it is your fault for incorrect ordering, or they pay if you recieve incorrect parts.

Duct Tape, Bailing wire, and super glue

If you need to squeeze some time outta those "dead" struts....hit the inner shaft pretty good with plain ole' super glue (the dry fast--thumb to forefinger stuff)....then work the hatch or hood up and down 6 or 7 times to spread the "truly amazing" stuff out. drop the hood and forget it for whatever they recommend (3 minutes normally does it) Ive had to clean off the glue once or twice and do the process over, but in a pinch or until the strut fairy comes this is a cool trick. Beats the poop outta the broom handle i used to use in my geo (shame) which nearly decapitated me a couple times---channel locks, vice grips, screwdriver/prybar/chisel....old milwaukee....anyone feeling this?? ::cue Deliverance banjos:::bounce: :bounce2:

Liftgate Struts - reasonably priced replacement

I'm actually new to the forum as we picked up a pretty nice '94 a couple weeks back. One of the first things i wanted to fix on the truck were the worn out gas struts on the rear liftgate.

After searching high and low, and sometimes high again, on this forum, and all over the web, i finally decided to try my luck with a set off ebay that were reasonably priced ($60ish for two) and that had the integrated bracket on each end.

Well, to my very pleasant surprise what showed up were not some made in china flimsy junk. they are made in the U.S. and they are essentially identical to the OEM that i pulled off. oh, and they operate smoothly and have plenty of strength to hold up that big heavy hatch.

I am not sure if i can give a plug here, you can search ebay for the seller: LiftSupportsDepot

hope that helps anyone that is looking.

I installed a set from auto palace or auto zone about 2 years ago and they are crapping out on me already. Hope the McMaster-Carr version lasts longer.

I just recently did this. https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/306413-my-fix-ever-elusive-hatch-struts.html
Takes about 15 minutes
Part number from McMaster-Carr 4138T579
Gas spring with ball-joint end fitting, 90lb force, 19.72" extended length, 7.87" stroke. $28.50 for the pair

This has been one of the best "mods" i've done for under $100.:bounce:
Cheers, Adam

X2 This is an easy fit if you have some basic tools like a grinder and a drill. These lift it higher than stock by about 2". When they do get soft they still will hold it up out of the way longer.

Thought i'd bump this thread for newbies like myself... Awesome cheap mod n skull saver. Struts on order! Thanks
