Yep, maintenance nightmare big time. Buy a 1998 lexus GS400, go almost as fast and practically never have a problem. Sounds much more sensible....

Luv the supra!, cant find one I can afford, but I did score an awsome TT 93 300Z for only 1800!! it was towed due to an overdue mechanics bill and a buddy of mine worked at the tow yard... long story short owner was a drunk and had no money to pay his tow drivers at christmas time and he begged me to buy it and it I told him all I had spare was 1800 and I didnt need the car-

I have been going over it with a fine tooth comb due to POs lack of maintenance (bushings, Struts, rod ends, tune up, etc. about 3000 so far) but this thing is clean as can be and no rust. I love the fact it is a 2 seater only- no room at all behind the seats just a solid wall. Yes they do have rear steering, its called HICAS- most people use a block off plate to hold it stationary for racing..... I havent gotten that far yet, twin turbos can be $$ to get up to top running condition.

I am planning on about 600 hp when I find an engine to rebuild with forged components, and upgraded HKS turbos- etc. these cars can be tweaked to about 450hp with 5-600 bucks into a "stock TT" car, with that said i do like the lines it seems to be a bit wide- but the body style can hang with the newer "sports cars" lines and better than most in many cases.

I was just under a TT today. The clutch had been losing fluid for time some now and I could not figure it out.

Rebuilt the slave cylinder. Nothing.
Thinking the copper o-rings on the slave cylinder was bad I sanded them down to get a new flat surface. Nothing.

Finally today, I had the owner pump the pedal several times. Turns out the hose was bad. Finally!!

1800 is a killer price for a rust free body. Hard to argue with that. A Supra would be multiple times more. I think the Supra is better in almost every way but whether it's worth the money is a good debate topic. But I'm very partial to all Toyota / Lexus vehicles.

DAMMMMM you are lucky!!

Just a thought: no car is very fast when it's behind a tow truck. Which with the 300 you will get VERY familiar with. That's what I see, and if you talk to independent mechanics they will say the same thing.

Drove one that my friend owned about 5 years ago. Silly fast, in a nice looking package, I remember it would run hot if you really, really beat on it.

However, other than a new clutch, my friend had no issues at all, and he cranked on it for nearly two years with no problems.

Very fun car, I think they are still one of the nicest lookers on the road.

Good memories, I also had a friend with a M series 325i and there was no comparison, I would take the 300 anyday.

Rezarf <><

Just goes to show there are exceptions to everything. But for most, the 300 is legendary for problems. Ya' never know though, do you? Even Toyota has made some lemons, and even Toyota has made some lemons of cars that are legendary for reliability (on rare occasion).

Well that was a thread stopper. I thought I'd at least get some people trashing me....come on guys....

Dad has a 96. Had a 91 before that. Had a 78 way back.

Anyway, as most others have said, it's a very maintenance intensive car. Very reliable when maintained, not so much when you let things slide. Great touring car, works well at 110mph all day long. Eats the fuel up there, though.

Nice car, but it's kinda like owning an airplane. When stuff needs to be worked on, it needs to be worked on before you go anyplace, or it's gonna cost you when it decides to break. I'd like to know how this is any different than a same-year Supra Turbo, same-era RX-7 or MR2 Turbo (I have some exp. with those) or any other ten-plus-year-old turbo sports car. 911s are considered to be pretty solid, but they're also owned by guys who tend to maintain them properly. I think that a 911 Turbo that hasn't been maintained will fall into the same problems as years go by.

They were a lot more fun to own when they were newer. Now it takes a person with deep pockets and an understanding spouse.

A few years ago, I did a working overhaul on an MR2 Supercharged. That car has been trouble free for me since the overhaul. I can't imagine dad's Z wouldn't be the same.

It's very hard to work on, if you plan on wrenching yourself.

The new Z.... ugh.

Not just that try to replace the last plug you must to remove the long tube it's terrible, also try to remove the timing belt...
Used to have it 465hp TT, launched and traction sucks big time. Probably weight distribution 55 front and 45 rears.
Spent $$$$ mostly JDM stuff, handling ->nightmare.

But one thing stock Z everyday drive, highway its okay.

Wish we can have R33 or R34 instead of Fairlady Z :flipoff2:

I owned a 91tt and loved every minute of it. I sold it when my wife had some medical bills piling up. I used to autocross it and took first place in my class several times. It didn't feel "fat" to me. I am not sure how they fare reliability wise once the miles pile up, but mine was fine at 90K.

I say go for it. If it turns into a money pit sell it!
