I got tired of looking for a Tacoma, I bought a 4runner instead.

Same here. I decided for the amount of money between a 4runner and a 4wd, 4 door taco, I could buy another 4runner, a utility trailer and a cheap pickup if I really needed a truck that bad.

4 door 1st gen 4wd tacomas are bringing serious $$ around here. It was more than double when I was looking a couple years ago.

Agreed. 3.4 is solid.

Water pump is driven by the timing belt. Front of motor needs to be disassembled. Not hard just time consuming.

My 1998 4Runner with the 3.4 has been the most reliable, trouble-free vehicle I have ever owned...6 Land Cruisers included.

Currently 282K miles

Water pump isn't bad, like @offr0adlim0 said. Easiest thing to do is just install a new one at every TB change and not worry about it, Easy-pesy. The 3.4 is much better than the 3.0 that I think has given you concerns about a Toyota v6.

This is all good info. Thanks

Every now and again a 4x4 Tacoma will pop up for sale here. And it's usually gone within days.

I've had dozens of offers for my '99 ext cab, but it's paid for and isn't going anywhere, anytime soon.

I can attest to how well this 3.4 performs in this truck. I wouldn't say gobs of power, but def sufficient, even pulling grades in and around Chattanooga. Parts were relatively inexpensive when i did my timing belt. Bought it in Feb and am now glad I didn't buy a 100 series, Been a blast.

I found one with the 4 cylinder for you but it's a regular cab.
