one of my customers wants to do a ford efi swap so i thought i'd get some input from people who have either of these mills in their cruisers, hopefully fj40s.
this will be going in a well set up 40, soa, lockers, 35s, C4 auto with orion, driven a lot including going up to the sierras frequently.

any input would be greatly appreciated!

thanks dan!:)

Been sitting on a drill rig for the last 8 days.

I REALLY like my AOD now. Completely made my truck. I still have the C6 sitting in need of a rebuild..

351 is a tad taller, and the truck intake is pretty restrictive. One of the aftermarket 5.0 intakes on a 351 running all mustang sensors and harness would be the best bet. Depending on how much power he wants. The 5.0 is a pretty good pulling motor in my truck. Obviously, the 351 would be stronger.

Ford Racing M-12071-A50 Ford Racing Multiport EFI Wiring Harness

This is the harness I used. Plug n play. Worked perfectly.

The stock mustang oil pan is a dual sump style. In a SU configuration, your oil pan/pumpkin clearance (mine is nicely self clearanced)

C4 should not be too bad on the oil pan clearance. The kickdown cable works really well using the stock TV cable as well.

I ran a 351w for a few years w/ a Q-jet on it and it ran ok but I decided that I had to have EFI so I swapped to a EFI 5.0 that I removed complete from a t-bird that I bought running and driving for $600. You can make a 351 EFI but the truck intakes are to tall and the Mustang style 351 intakes were more than I paid for the whole t-bird hence the reduction in displacement, which is noticeable but w/ my gearing you never notice on the trail. The ability to start every time in gear or not is worth every inch of displacement lost.

I have a NP435 behind mine w/ a stock 3-speed case but an Orion is the way to go in the long run if you want to keep the FJ axles. The only reason I don't have an Orion is that my gearing is fine as it sits w/ the 435 and I am going to link and 1 ton my truck eventually.

why not a split tcase?

no 4:1 w/ a split case....

Split case has no e-brake for a 40....

thanks for the replies and input guys!

right now we're leaning towards the 302 possibly with a stroker crank so we end up with a 347. not sure if we're going to run the ford efi or the tbi setup from turbo city. a bronco buddy of mine has installed their kit on a 347 and he's super happy with it. that means quite a bit coming from him cause he;s a picky bastard. i also like the simplicity of the turbo city setup; half the sensors and the parts are availabloe just about anywhere.

please keep the info coming, i do appreciate it!

with the auto, a 4:1 is not as necessary.. I honestly almost never use the second tcase on my rig..

Pbrake is available for a split tcase.

one thing about the sensors.. They make it run more efficiently.. I went on a recent road trip with my 60. 70 mph, 210 miles through nevada. 18 mpg... course, I can get 10 mpg out at the dunes without problem as well.

I was astounded. It may not happen again, but heck. It seems to have plenty of power when needed.

I would not do Tbi if I were you..

Good point on the auto.

Either way I am a fan of the factory intake / injection setup. I knew i was going to loose some power going from the 351 to the 302 but I decided that I could always add an off the shelf supercharger to the factory Ford setup if i had to have more power. The SC wouldn't be as easy of an option w/ the TBI setup and you can get a whole car for what you will pay for an intake or an aftermarket harness. The 347 is intriguing and you can get a stock setup to run a 347 with no problem.

Multi Port over TBI in my book any day and "factory" over aftermarket in most cases as far as engine control goes unless you plan to run a Haltec. In my book "simple" EFI is usually inferior.

Oh ya and you should be able to find Ford Mustang parts at any parts store in North America.

347 is not gonna live as long.. If you go slightly smaller, longevity is significantly increased.

302 intakes fit on a 351 just fine...
So, you can either use the stock HO intake off of a 5.0 on a 351, or get one of the aftermarket intakes and run that.
A 351 with a cam, mild head work and a good intake will smoke the tires.

Or, get a 351 and bore/stroke it to 427..

No you can not. The 351s have a taller deck height than the 302s and therefore a wider intake. You can use a 5.0 GT40 Upper intake on a Lightening GT40 351 lower but they are expensive. You can also buy a Edelbrock 351 Mustang intake to use the mustang injection parts on a 351.

You also cant use a mustang upper on a truck 351 lower because the passages are different. I have a truck 351 injected lower that I will give away because I bought it before I learned that.

Yes, you can, it does take an adapter, but it works just fine.
AP-01 and AP-04

Or, you can use the FI 351 lower, and a mustang upper.
B.C. Broncos - Early Bronco EFI Fuel Parts and Kits - B. C. Broncos - products new home - manifold adaptor 351/5.0

Additionally, there are a TON of 351 aftermarket intake manifolds designed for the 5.0 style fuel injection system, not the 5.8 truck style intake. If fuel injection is the limiting factor from going 351, look around more. There are lots of options out there.

I'll take that 351 lower intake off of your hands if you are no longer interested in it tho ;)

Thats news to me... So maybe I should have said..... "without some goofy $400 adapter"

If you need the manifold PM me but if not I will hold onto it for now.

Or a $90 one..
It all depends on what you want to do.

I was kidding about that manifold ;)
my 5.0 is nice and fresh. The next motor will be a 351, but that will be a while :)

Pay attention to the cooling side of things, not just the radiator size/core count but also focus on getting the air to move through the engine bay and out as quickly as possible. All my ford motors, 1 x stroker windsor and 2 x 351 clevelands have always struggled with cooling, ok when just cruising around, but any sort of hill work with a load on would see the temps starting to rise.

I run a Fox Body Mustang 3 core Radiator in my 40 w/ a stock 5.0 Clutch and Fan w/ NO shroud and have had ZERO cooling issues w/ either the 351w or the EFI 5.0

my son & I are going to try a complete ford power/drivetrain swap off of my early bronco crawler to his fj40. 5.0efi motor/3 speed manual/twin sticked dana20. dana44 up front & 9"out back. I'll let you know how it turns out.
