got ahold of this inexpensive chinese power washer (don't ask.... :))

as usual, the instructions are really bad, I have already found 2 significant unbelievable mistakes in basic stuff...

anyways, the manual says to put 100ml of "68# high-grade wearable hydraulic pressure oil" in the pump oil box.

Can somebody translate this from chinese babelfish english to US english? :D Do I surmise correctly that this would be ISO 68 anti-wear hydraulic oil?

Either way, any advice as to what oil to use or not in there...?

TIA

added: could I use regular oil (engine or gear) or even ATF or which I have tons, instead?

ISO 68 hydraulic fluid.

For a cheap pressure washer, I'd just use 4oz of brake fluid.

Brake fluid, eh? Interesting, I didn't think of BF as having much lubing properties.

It doesn't.

ISO68 = 68cst = ~25W motor oil = 80W gear oil. If you don't have any hydraulic oil handy, gear oil or 30W nondetergent motor oil would be the best sub.

good to know. The stuff in the box was very low viscosity, almost like ATF. Didn't feel like 30W at all, though....

Is it the original Chinese fill, hard to tell what they put in there? The "stuff" in my HF bandsaw gear box smelled like fish!:D Is the fluid lubing gears, bearings..?

probably original. No particular fish or soy smell that I could tell. (But strangely, I felt hungry again just an hour after working on it... :D)

It's some sort of lobed rotating cam affair, maybe transferring rotation to linear actuation, can't tell. Lube is probably for contact with that as well as whatever else is doing the actual pumping in the box... Not yet taken apart.

I bought a quart of "pressure washer pump oil" at Northern for my "Northstar" pressure washer which came from there. The engine is a Honda but I bet the pump on it is chinese.

do I remember correctly that they label it 30W?

Interestingly, I see that most of these pumps appear to be made out of brass. But the cheapo one I'm working on seems to be aluminum. Shorter life expectancy maybe...?
