Quoted me $2,075+ tax to rebuild my 1FZ-FE long block. I have no idea if that's a good or bad price or if they're reputable or not. What questions should I be asking them and what requirements should I give them?

Please be kind, I'm new here.

I'm paying upwards of $5k but I'm doing some extra stuff with forged pistons and stuff. I would be wary of $2k for a shop doing it. Heck, I'd be happy if I were able to do it myself for $2k

I would see if they've ever rebuilt a 1FZ-FE before, or if they make their money swapping in reman'd long blocks they already have access to. There are a few engine shops that offer great prices like that by swapping in remanufactured engines from a local supplier instead of actually rebuilding the engines in the vehicles.

I would also see if they used all OEM parts.

Lastly, I would inquire as to what kind of warranty they will give you.

Question. I am in the process of a 1FZ-FE rebuild and dropped my block and head off at the machinist. He did hot tank the block and now said I need a bushing for the front of the block. Would this be the 1FZ-FE Oil Pump Bushing indicated above? Machinist thought it should be about 1" in diameter. I talked with CruiserDan and tried to order it but he said it is not a Toyota servicable part. Any help is apprecitaed. The machine works already finished on the cylinders and head :( so I am committed on this block it seems.

Yes it's the bushing in the above link... made by 3rd party since Mr.T forgot to make them.. :)

Nice to know some one makes them, I didn't know myself until I saw the link!

AJIK apparently now also has a bushing installation tool, ask about that when you call.

That seems like a decent price to me. Find out the following:
- what parts will be replaced and with OEM or aftermarket parts?
- what kind of warranty?
- does the warranty have any gotchas to be aware of since you're doing the engine pulling/installing.
- head work include a valve grind AND valve stem height reduction? This will be part of the valve clearancing. Anytime the valves and seats are ground, the valve clearances open up so the stems need to be "lopped" off the correct amount using the proper grinder.
- what brand is the head gasket?
- what work will be done with the pistons, rings?
- will the main and con rod bearings be checked for wear or will they be replaced as a set as a matter of normal course of action?
- crank shaft journals will be polished on a machine?

So another words, get an EXACT list of the crap they will be doing.
