I picked up a 1986 LHD BJ70 SWB last year, and it is generally in great shape, but the original carpet is pretty sad by this point. Grey interior. I’m looking for options to replace the carpet, and not finding much. I don’t want to switch to vinyl flooring, as far as I can tell the carpet is original, and I want to keep it updated in the same vein, even if not completely original. I’d love a more premium material, and extra sound/heat insulation is highly desirable for me. I drive it regularly, including commuting and road trips, so a more refined interior is important to me…it isn’t strictly for wheeling or local trail runs. It also gets use as a demo vehicle for my workplace, so a touch of class is desirable.

Options I’ve considered:

Tru-Fit in Australia makes front carpet, and can supply additional yardage for the rear which I could cut and have a local shop edge for me. It looks like they offer LHD options, but I’m unsure on the quality. Can anyone confirm/deny?

ACC, or various resellers like stockinteriors.com or OC Carpets offer a molded FJ60 carpet. I wonder how far off it would be from fitting? The rear would obviously be long, but might be trimmed to fit. Anyone tried it? I’ve used their products before on other Toyota projects and liked the quality of the ultra-plush mass-backed. Unfortunately, they don’t offer mass backing on the 60-Series carpets for some reason.

Some folks have ordered bulk material and cut and sew or glue until it is fitted. Seems incredibly tedious to me, and no way to add backing, so I’d only consider this as a last resort.

ACC will mold a carpet to fit, but they’re in Alabama, and I’m in Oregon, which is an awfully long drive to get carpet.

Any ideas of experience from other carpeted 70-Series owners is appreciated, thanks!

I haven't seen a single aftermarket option that fits anywhere close to the oem ones . How bad is yours ? Post some pics here and maybe someone has one in better shape they might want to sell

Hello,

OEM is available. However, you have to order from the dealer. And it is not cheap: last time I checked it was around US$ 900 for the front piece.

Regarding local shops, there might be one able to use your carpet as a template.

Thanks for the idea, but I already tried this. I had no luck; as far as I know, the parts are are all NLA/Discontinued from Toyota. The front section is part number 58510-90K34-03. The rear section is 58570-90K05-03, and the wheel wells are 62613-90K03-03 and 62614-90K03-03. All came back as discontinued. If you know of a source, or if you know of a later part number that supersedes these and is still available, I would be super-appreciative of the help, thanks!

If I’m honest, mine isn’t bad, but it is 40 years old, and has miscellaneous small worn spots and stains. The backing is also failing, so the carpet is shedding grainy, crusty bits everywhere in the interior. A few spots are stretched/loose/baggy and don’t conform to the floor super well.

Thanks for the confirmation that aftermarket fitment is not great. I also appreciate the idea of looking used. The tough part is I’m picky, and I’d love something that looks new or near-new. The bodywork/paint has all been done, the seats are new, I have a new headliner ready to install, the seatbelts are getting re-webbed, the door cards are going to be refurbished soon, and the carpet will soon be the one shabby part of the interior. If only I had realistic expectations for a nearly 40-year-old off-roader! 🤪 😅

Look in Japan then if you want near new , the rubber driver protector will be on the wrong side but you probably want to put some front mats over the oem carpet anyways . The mats I have seen in Europe , Central and South America and Australia all have wear and tear as people use the lc's for what they are intended . Japan seems to have more the mentality of the cars and coffee crowd we have here in the US plus they have plenty low mileage LJ71's with ticking time bombs under the hood waiting to go in self destructing mode .

Hello,

Older model (up to 2006) carpets are discontinued.

You can try
  1. Front: 58510-60U40-E0.
  2. Rear: 58570-60741-E2.
  3. Left wheel well: 62614-60391-E1.
  4. Right wheel well: 62613-60322-E1.
The color is of these carpets is oak. I do not know if other colors (e. g., gray) are available.

These parts are available only from the dealer. You may need to fill the import form (I keep forgetting the exact name) to get access in your neck of the woods,

Last time I checked, the front carpet cost US$ 900; wheel wells carpet was around 450 each. It is not a cheap option.

I just ordered an aftermarket 76 molded carpet from Knox auto carpets in australia for my FZJ70, and plan to cut it down to size and trim the edges where necessary. They also have unmolded yardage.

I had looked at trufit, which has mixed reviews on mud, and not great ones on google, and then decided to go OEM oak as Juan had suggested above. Amayama had the parts in stock but shipping was… intolerably high…on top of the ~$800 parts cost.

Which sent me searching, and I decided to roll the dice with Knox, after reading mostly positive reviews online and doing a lot of quasi-scientific eyeball comparisons between their mold, and my floor. It’s in the mail now and the price was reasonable.

If you are willing to wait 5 or 6 weeks for me to get it and install it, I’ll let you know if it is a viable option or a terrible mistake.

I’d love to wait and see how the Knox works out, thanks! I wasn’t aware of that option, so thanks for the heads up. I found similarly uninspiring mix of reviews on the Trufit. When looking at grey OEM carpet for say, a 2006 FZJ71, there are too many different variations with part numbers, but not enough additional information for me to feel comfortable dropping big money on an overseas order without confirmation of fit. I’m guessing all the variations are for bucket seats or split bench, maybe different console designs, RHD and LHD heel pads, etc.

I’ll await your review once you get the carpet. 😁

I bought from ACC. Carpet is close but i will be doing some cutting and piecing. There is enough to cover all, it's just gonna take some cyphering, fittin', cuttin', tapin', and cussin'

yes thats the only one they offer
Thanks; that’s what I figured. When I was looking at their stuff, their 60-Series carpet looks like it probably comes closer to matching the contours of the 70-Series floor than their 80-Series carpet. I’m curious to see how you get on with trimming and getting it into place. 😁

The main cutting will be from the front of the wheel well to back of the front seats (look at photo for reference). the foot well and under the seats is the same.
