I can't disagree with the first two posts, but I have been studying these rigs for more years than I have my cruiser. My second trip up to Alaska was in a 1980 Toy motorhome and it did perfect on the Alcan and back to Calif.
The cabin part of the motorhome and its appliances are standard issue for motorhomes, the same brands are used for appliances on the toy as one the big rigs you see on the road. Depending on the floor plan you can conseavably sleep six people, I personally would have only two adults and the rest being kids.
The floor plan I want has the overcab bed which fits my huge but and my women at the time. The side table converts to a small bed and the couch folds down to provide sleeping for two. They have the full bathroom, kitchen, some storage, some have gennies, outside showers, etc. I want the tracking satalite system so I can watch my shows.
The truck part is 100% toyota truck, enough said!
They are not recomened for towing though lots of folks do tow according to another forum where I visit. They are slow but also get 15 mpg or better comared to about 8 mpg from other rigs. Oh and lets not forget the reliability compared to trannies dropping out of American rigs, and the other are just RV's put on ford or chevy vans. There are also toy ins around the country as they have a following as adiment as the 80 and wheeling croud.
You want to stay with the 87 or newer, they made them till 94. The ones before 87 had half ton axels, and unless the PO got in on the recall or changed it over themselves the weaker axels are considered dangerous, there have been a few reports of axels breakin as the RV Manufactuer did not listen to toyota about Maximum vehicle weight.
In 1988 they went to the one ton axel and that seemed to fix the prob, no more reports of damage after 88. Dolphin is nice, the toyota seabreaze is the upscale model made by Dolphin ( I forget the parent company name National RV I believe). Winabego also made some nice ones with the Warrior and I forget the name of their fancyer one at the moment.
I always read on the 80 side peaple saying the 80 is no sports car. Same with the TOY, But up here I catch up to the speeders at the next light
Check trader online, they usualy have 50 to a hundred at any given time. Ebay usualy has lots of pics on their adds so thats a good place to see the inside of one. They are small, they are slow, they can fit in any parking spot your 80/60/40 can fit in, you can turn them around in the street. You can go to parks that others can't do to length restrictions.
I want a locked 80, I got my wife a 80 so now there is a 80 in the family, MY dream ride is a toy motorhome, though I won't admit it on this board

So far three times I have started my Motorhome fund to only need to use the money else were. But I started saving again now that the family has the safe family rig.
Try these sites if you need more info
www.toyotamotorhomes.com
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/toyota-campers/
the first is a private site with history/forum/for sale/tech/etc
the second is yahoo, hard to follow threads but great info in the files section like
floorplans/buyers guide hell just about the most complete info on these rigs.
Just like mud being the best subject specific for cruisers
And the folks on the forum are great just like here.
Well I've been ramblin as there is finaly a subject where I know a little, If you have any quesions you can pm me and I can go look for the answer for you, I have spent many a graveyard on the two sites above, there about all that exists for this info. Its funny there forum has many of the same questions that are asked on this forum, headers/head gasket/cruise control not working type stuff.
Well I am off my 16 in a half hour and need to shop for Thanksgiving before I get to go home, I hope your holidays are good.
Steven
I have to disagree with one thing Dan said, there a many Toyo Motorhomes with close to or over 100,000 miles and still going strong, Just like our trucks here.
