I'm thinking of maybe using my FJ with a work trailer (an enclosed 6x12?) and wondered if that kind of use would be too much for it on a daily basis? I'm a woodworker and would use it for hauling tools and projects to job sites.

I guess I'm just looking for some of the 'cons' to this set up. Obviously increased wear, but where exactly would I expect that to manifest itself?

Thanks everybody.

According to Toyota, your gross trailer weight should not exceed about 2000lbs and the tongue weight should not exceed about 200lbs. The driver's manual for both my '79 and my '83 say the same thing, I can look it up tomorrow if I remember. The data plate for your truck should give you the maximum combined gross vehicle weight which I think is around 5700lbs but I'm not sure I'm remembering that correctly or if it's the same for your '74.

The increased wear is most likely going to show up in your clutch and your brakes. I also had trouble with my rear wheel bearings but I now think my trailer was a lot heavier than it should have been and the bearings were still original (about 185,000 miles), so it might not be a problem if you stay within Toyota's weight limits.
