OJ,

You talkin' about putting gussets in these areas like where the green or red lines are?

I prolly won't get to them until next weekend. I've gotta get this thing sealed for a roadtrip at the end of the week and then I'll have the time to finish stuff up in a few weeks.

That looks great! Good job. One suggestion, I'd gusset that side tube up on the frame, like a slider. This will get some abuse and you don't want that side protection shoved into the body.

Or are you talking verticle like this?

I'd leave that weld as is, it's a good weld and grinding it off just makes it weaker.

Thanks. Not too bad for a little stick welder, eh? I like the way it looks too.

AW Towing and ( don't slap me Junk) Mcmaster. The pivot parts are tractor parts sourced at the local farm store and I picked up the oiless bearing from a bearing shop here, but, I think Mcmaster or Grainger would have them too.

First of all, this thing got slapped together fast because I am leaving town friday morning and I'll be gone for about a week. I won't be able to fix anything 'til then.

Observations:

Christo, no need to say I told you so. I bent the latch tonight test fitting everything.
Ordering 2000lb latch.

The tire is way to far away from the body. (That I might fix before I go.) My mount behind the tire is going to be adjustable so it's just tacked in place now. It might also be too high.

I would feel bad running it on this trip w/o paint if I hadn't seen the 100 on the CM04 dvd that was also running unpainted front and rear bumpers. :D

I still need to finish up my gussets everywhere and put the end caps on the front of the wings and cut the hole for the flush mount reciever and get that welded in.

The way I have it mounted to the frame now is real cheesey. It was just to get it roadworthy. I am confident in it taking an impact, but, it is not up for tug duty yet.

Should've had a more detailed plan before I started. May have saved some time.

It would be nice to have a mig and a plasma cutter. :princess:

It's been a kick in the pants, but, I need a week off.

TF,

Great job. Keep us updated on the progress of this project! I't always great to see someone building a bumper for the 80. It's a great learning experience to share.

I see a girly man car next to the 80. ;) It looks like a NA Miata.

John

Thanks. I should be back to it in a week.

Vertical like that. A stick? I'm impressed.

No thanks. You wanna ride in mine :flipoff2: I have a NA Miata, too. The Miata and the LC are two really great Japanese models with high fun-to-drive factor and many aftermarket parts (not just rice parts).

That's aomething that I'll work on when I get back. The whole mount down there is gonna be a lil' different.

I dig the little car. I've got some mods planned for that someday too. My motherinlaw likes me, it was a gift from her. :D
Now if she would just give me her BMWZ3...

I'm back to working on it on and off, but, getting away and driving around with it on there for about 2K miles last week learnt me some stuff.

One of the things I noticed that I need to change was that I had no verticle stop at the latch end of the tire carrier. I had planned on havin that anyway, but, having it pop open because it could bounce down past the latch was a good reminder.

Second thing is the tire was too high according to the spouse. :princess: So I lowered that and tilted it into the body a little tighter and she is much happier. It will still be able to be mounted higher than that for trail duty with an extra mount that I haven't installed yet.

Rust sucks.

I need to finsh my mounts because it was a little uncomfortable knowing that I couldn't tug anything with the rear bumper on the trip, when I needed to. That will include redoing some of the mounts to have some adjustment in them. The wings are pointed down at the tire right now and that just won't do.

The hinge has functioned great, whereas the latch was way to light and the 2K# latch will be on in a few days.
