The rain has really put my dirtbiking/ quad trip on hold:mad: So I made a trip to lowes to buy some mesh:steer: I thought I did a decent job for a noob without a full set of tools lol

The procedure was easy...after cutting out the grille center, just buy a big sheet of mesh. Trace out what you need, cut the mesh, bend the mesh to fit, pick mounting points to drill out, bolt it dowm, trim excess mesh on the back side. Done. Just wanted to share.

Inspired by Desert Yeti's Darthcruzr grille, but I decided to go with a larger mesh like on that 80 series on slee's site.

Now...should I black out the mesh like the grille surround? Or just leave it chrome? I'm leaning toward blacking it out, but want opinions:) And where do you get the Big Toyota emblem? with toyota spelled out

1st pic is showing the original grille
2nd and 3rd pic shows the mesh grille. (No time to mount it yet, weather sucks)

Looks nice! I'd black it out and put either a sombrero or an old-school TOYOTA on it.

Way to do something that makes your truck look unique.

That said. Evey example of this that I've seen looks like it was homemade (not in a good way). The mesh ends up wavy and uneven and looks like something a 16 year old would do to his turbo Subaru. I look forward to seeing your final product though.

The problem of wavy mesh is a resultant of not enough screws holding it down. I made sure there was a screw every 5-6 inches so it would stop from being wavy, hope it holds up

sadly, and not trying to be a debbie downer; i agree.

the mesh isn't even perfectly vertical. I don't think mesh works well with this grill

Hey LJ_24, nice work but I don't love it. I didn't love DarthCrzr's job either. For such a high end vehicle it takes the class down a notch. Unfortunately it looks like chicken wire you bought at Lowes and not a bad ass retro FJ40 grille.

Look for the wire mesh similar to the one from Slee, that one looks sweet.

Its okay, I will try to straighten it out tmrw, in person though, the gap looks the same all the way around. Opinions are always appreciated, even if it is somewhat insulting;)

Dang, I did all I can to avoid the chicken wire from lowes, I was even guaranteed that it wasnt chicken wire..but of course they also tried to get me to buy a worthless $40 snipper:mad:

the tag even says wire mesh:(

sorry man. really not trying to be insulting at all. just a personal preference i guess. you have a good rig going. just throwing out my thoughts. i am really anal about symmetry and such.

Sorry for the hard time. No, it's not chicken wire, I think it's used on walls in construction so that stucco can adhere to your wall.

Look forward to seeing some daytime photos.

I really like that Slee photo.

The TOYOTA Badge will add a lot to the look of yours.

You stepped up and did something different. That's worth the insults.

It's a work in progress....enjoy :flipoff2:

Zackly...I'm sure its not otherwise LJ would have been cussing all his cuts...it looks like blood lath!

When you hit a duck at 70 mph this one looks like it will take it and protect your radiator and condenser, not sure about the first one...........

That 80 belongs to Treeroot. Everything he does is top notch. I'd like to see a daytime photo with a sombrero on it. Your truck is looking better than before IMO. Keep up the good work.
