Sadly, nothing is cheap when it comes to cars/trucks or anything for that matter. I went to a shop to see how much they'd charge to cut out the center of the grille, they said $65...so I decided to just buy a dremel for $60 and have the dremel for future use. I dont see why they would charge $65 dollars for a 15 minute job...
Spend another $65 and you might be able to get your grill looking halfway decent again! Just paint it black. :p

Do it right and get some appropriate mesh from mcmaster:

McMaster-Carr

I like your attempt but it can be refined for the look I think you are going for along with more protection. I recently made these sliders and happen to have a toyota sombrero design handy and will be glad to cut it out of some 1/8" scrap on our waterjet and send it to you if you want.

Also some suggestions. have you thought about putting "TOY" on the front instead of "TOYOTA"?

P.S. I am more of a fan of the slotted grille for our vehicle.

What the F. The billet for '02- is only $65? I got screwed. (And I don't even want the billet now!)

I thought grilles for 98-02 are all the same?

can we get both the truth and a nice story?:D

We can try.

The shop didn't want to do the work. They didn't want you to come back and say it's their fault your grille didn't come out right, so they gave you a price high enough that you would want to leave, but not so high you'd never want to come back.

Whenever a shop doesn't want to do a job, or thinks that the work will come back to haunt them, they're going to price themselves out of the work. We did it from time to time, and every so often we'd get surprised that someone would accept. That's when we got scared, because it generally meant they'd been chased out of every other shop.

The welded wire mesh takes and holds tighter radius bends without deforming, also you can clip segments at the edges of the screen and bend them to make radiused curves like in the corners of the grille. We use the welded wire material regularly for shop fabrication, while expanded metal screen only 'works' visually when it is stamped to shape then welded to a solid frame border. This preserves the pattern.

Great idea but I'll second nomembername...find a heavy gauge welded-wire fabric. The prime reason for your grill in the first place is to keep debris out of your radiator. The radiator fins are fragile; pebbles, sticks, [insert least favorite road and trail junk here] will bend them up and reduce your cooling or, if you are unlucky, hole the radiator. The factory plastic isn't great but it does the job. Your wire mesh probably will not. The wall screen and lathe is too fine a gauge.

Not that you need to go Bentley caliber or anything but a good welded fabric will be symmetric, hold its shape while you are working it so it will stay oriented when you finish, and will deflect crap from the radiator. You could give this place a call Concrete Woven Wired Wire Mesh, Welded Wire Mesh, Stainless Steel Wire Mesh, Galvanized Wire Mesh | Mechanical Metals the page there has examples anyway...likely a 4x4 mesh something between 18 and 16 gauge stainless is probably right.

Alternately, if you like perforated, I've used online metals before: Online Metal Store | Small Quantity Metal Orders | Metal Cutting, Sales & Shipping | Buy Steel, Aluminum, Copper, Brass, Stainless | Metal Product Guides at OnlineMetals.com since they specialize in small quantity orders. Take a look at the perforated stainless sheet pages.

.

I did, but there are way too many toyota pickups with TOY as their emblem

I'd maybe spray the a/c lines and stuff underneath there with a really light coat of flat black too, just to hide the stuff behind the grill. Nice attempt though, I like the look you're going for with it.

Hey LJ_24, nice work but I don't love it. I didn't love DarthCrzr's job either. For such a high end vehicle it takes the class down a notch. Unfortunately it looks like chicken wire you bought at Lowes and not a bad ass retro FJ40 grille.

Look for the wire mesh similar to the one from Slee, that one looks sweet.

Now that looks awesome.

Got the old school toyota emblem installed :D

My mesh grille is complete:) I thought it looks okay but I'm sure theres a lot of people who think otherwise haha

That looks much better LJ!

What's up with the extended econoline? :)

The final product looks good from this viewpoint. Did you ever paint the stuff behind the grille black?

Not yet, need to do that still but I dont think its that big of a deal now;)

Maybe a map of the islands on my rear window in black:)

I'm positive there are more than enough in killah Kal, that you really don't need to do that.

Maybe one of those small rectangular badges that have the colors of the nation's flag, like I see of Italy, France, etc. I've been wondering if they make em for Philippines.

Good point, I guess I'll just get a small badge for the windshield. Better yet we should start a filipino group here on mud hahah then get matching decals

nice paint colour, very rare here.
I'd have lost the TOYOTA badge on the grill. Just my personal taste. Not sure if the original badge would look good in its chrome on that grill....maybe blacked out ..yes, or maybe no badge at all?

anyway, your 'cruiser looks great.
cheers
peter
