I dont think chrome ones look bad. Especially if you leave the sombrero chrome. Some one mentioned in another thread (maybe the one in the link above) that you can get black covers for them at auto parts stores. Problem with finding lugs for our wheels is they are a certain type. Not just any black lug will work.

Yep, I am finding it very hard to find OEM black lug nuts. I'll hit Cruiser Dan up. I'm sure he can order some for me.

I checked the Lugs that are currently being used by the custom rims and they are not the correct ones. Who ever knew it would be so hard to find!

This weekend I replaced my spark plugs with NGK Iridium’s. Wow, plugs 7 & 8 took some work to get to. I had to use a couple of extensions with a swivel adaptor to get to them. The plugs had never been changed (12 + years.. 80K..). I did notice a difference, mainly in the idling and smoothness of the engine. It took me about 3 hours to do since I had to dig around and find the right socket attachments. Time will tell if any gas mileage is gained from the new plugs.

I should get my wheels back from powder coating this week. I finally found some OEM lug nuts from ebay. I'm looking for the best deal on some BFG 285/75/16's...

My rig is slowly coming together!

Once I get my bottom end finished. I plan to start working through the engine as well. We want to see pics of the wheels when you get them mounted up and installed!

I'm rethinking my wheel issue now. I'm thinking about keeping the 18'' custom wheels and just putting more agressive tires on them. 275/65/18 BFG A/T tires wouldn't look that bad?

I've been doing some research and the Fuel wheels are built for off-roading. It just so happens the P/O has road tires on them and not off-road ones.

Anyone see any downside of doing this vs putting 285/75/16 tires on stock black powder coated wheels?

Even though they claim to be made for off-road.... You wont see too many people running them offroad. If you like them then keep them. However, just know you might get teased a little from this crowd.

Are they harder to keep balanced and true vs the standard stock wheels? I don't see any weights on the outside of them like you normally see. I'm assuming the custom wheels hide the weights inside for balancing...

If I sell them, that means more $$ for other mods, so I'm kind of torn. Not that it matters, but my wife "Hates" the look of the custom wheels. She says they destroy the lines of the stock cruiser.

Your wife is right.

Wheels tend to get harder to balance and can require more weight to balance as the tire size increases b/c there is more room for errors when molding the new rubber. Also, variances are more pronounced as you go up in size. It took more weights to get my BFG 285s balanced than the stock tires that came with the truck. I got lucky with the 35s as Nitto has some great QC when it comes to manufacturing.

Powder coating is done on wheels and new BFGs are 285/75/16 are mounted. I will take photos tomorrow. It looks much better now! It is starting to look like a land cruiser....

Yeah...Where are the pics?

- Sent from a very small supercomputer.

Dark out...plus I have to take off the running boards...tomorrow for sure.

How much did it cost to get them power coated? Is this price for 4 or 5 wheels?

$65 per wheel. I only got 4 Powder Coated. I'm happy with how they turned out. Pictures to come soon...

Ready for Dirt!!

I finally got around to taking off the Running Board today. Here are some photos with the Powder Coated Stock Rims, new BFG 285/75/16's. I still need to rattle can the center caps.

It's finally ready to see some dirt! This Land Cruser is an off-road virgin. Any suggestions for its first local San Diego Trail?

The transformation is slowly taking place...Suspension is still stock.

I also need to figure out how to stuff a 285/75/16 spare under it. The guy at the tire shop said it wouldn't fit. Any suggestions? I have a tow hitch...

Looks Great!!!!!

As for the spare... try it yourself. I dont see why it wouldnt fit if I could get a 295 in the same location. Or you could come over and I could give you a hand....

As for trails, I cant recommend anything because I just moved here this summer and havnt gotten out to explore yet. But, here is my word of caution, you are running stock and have no sliders so dont try anything too difficult that could damage the side pinch welds. It is really expensive to repair. I recommend sliders as one of the first mods to some one that wants to wheel their rig. Mine have more than paid for themselves multiple times over.

Edit: I am really liking the black on that color..... I might have to change mine from graphite to black..... Hmmmmm

Thanks! I like the black look... I may take you up on the spare tire install. I didn't purchase a full size spare yet until I am sure it will fit.

Sliders will probably be my next Mod. I don't have that much off road experience, so I will probably want to go with others until I get more experience and feel comfortable... We will have to organize some easy local trail runs!
