I have a talegate in mine and it doesn't seam to make a difference.

Cheers

The tub is still plenty strong with a tail gate, but honestly once you have the lid and it opens alot, i regret doing my tail gate. The trailer isn't water tight anymore....

Then you put spacer so that the cylinder housing doesn't touch lid, he is probably right about strut life, but seriously, it ain't going to open has much has a rear car door!

Ya.. probably not a real issue for our uses.
My strut mount balls are on little brackets, so they stand out a little further and the strut
clears the rail just right.

I like your gate set up. Looks factory....er.. Military.

Looks good!! I did the same thing this summer! We decided to go down to Olympic and Mt. Rainier National parks for about 3 weeks. (6500km round trip) So I found a trailer and had about a month to get it ready. With 2 kids and all the stuff it was a life saver. How do you like the RTT? Do you find it has allot of room. Right now we have an 8 man Big Agnes tent witch is great for a base camp but I would like to have a RTT for just the 1 nighters.

Cheers

Nice set up!

Trailer is the only way to fly.
RTT is awesome. I don't think I could ever sleep on the ground again.
The set up time is a few minutes. Setting up camp is no longer a drag. You have to put up with people wandering into your camp to ask all about it ALL the time though. Rain, falling or puddling on the ground is no longer a disaster.
We find we are doing a LOT more camping and Road trips now that we have the RTT.
Our Eezi awn 2200 Family tent is comfortable with the 2 adults and 2 kids(10 &11)
There isn't piles of room to flail around when we're all in there, but were not on top of each other.

I guess you would have to change your Hinge/strut location to run a RTT on top

You kill me......That set up just looked great behind your 80.

Still looking......

Shane

hey 70sguy nice set up. How does the 80 series handle the weight of the trailer? Do you have 6 or 8 cylinder or did you swap to 1HD turbo? I also have a 80 series and found a M101 but dude wants 1000 bucks cdn. Is that a rip off? Did you keep the pintle hook or change to ball?
Nice set up man, quite jealous.
where is greensville?

I just purchased one for a bit more than that, but PO had done an SOA, extended tongue, lock n roll coupler, Yota 6 lug hubs, 80 series rims and 35" tires.

If it's in good shape, or perhaps one that was never put into service, the price is not out of line from the research I've done on pricing the M101 CDN.

See my sig line. 1HD-FT 24valve Inline 6 Turbo diesel, 5spd and Part time Tcase w/ Manual hubs.
Loaded M101 is probably pushing 1200 lbs. The 80 handles it just fine, you do feel it back there but it isn't having it's way with the 80. It doesn't create any handling issues. Braking is fine, but trailer brake upgrade may get down the road at some point.
I am sticking with pintle/lunette for now. I would never go back to a ball.

$1000 is in the ball park for a good shape M101. I managed to get mine for $800, but it was off a friend of mine so it was a bit of a bro deal.
Apparently the Canadian Military has disposed of all their M101s now so I wouldn't expect prices to drop any time soon, or expect supply to get any better.

Greendale is the 1 horse town I live in. A little known place about 1hr east of Vancouver.

Hey Brent, that sounds like a sick trailer.... matching wheels even? Hey, was that the 101 for sale on Ih8mud classifieds that was used as a boy scouts or cub scouts event trailer??? Sounds identical to that one, I think it was in California but can't remember now...

Greendale... found it. Love that area. you sure have one sick ride, all the bells and whistles, with 24valve too. I have 5 speed manual also, love the stick. and you have manual locking hubs... How much of a hassle was it to swap full time 4 wheel to manual with centre diff case? Did you use Aisin hubs? Rough idea on cost for this upgrade? sure sounds nice.To dream one day.
Do you recognize a champagne colored RHD 81 series with "Active Vacation" sticker on the back? He lives in your neighbourhood, he's a guy I fish with occasionally.
Happy Holidays man.

No hassle at all. The donor HDJ81 that I bought to provide the 5spd and related misc came with OEM HF1A part time Tcase bolted to the 5spd. Also came with Aisin manual hubs. So I just swapped it all in. I have lost ABS function for now since I had to swap in the earlier birfs that match the hubs (with the C-clip groove in the correct spot)
I am going to have my original ABS Birfs machined for the extra c-clip groove, and get em line bored for zirk fittings so I can pump fresh grease right into the center of the birf bell.
When they go back in I will be able to get ABS function back at least while the hubs are locked in Hi.
I love the lighter feel of the steering with the Part time set up. Seemed to be more caster sensitive once the front end stopped pulling, so I installed 3 deg Slee blues with my OME 850/860
Can't comment on fuel savings that the part time kit accounts for as it went in along with the Diesel and 5spd. Overall Economy went from 280-300miles per tank to 450-500miles per tank.
Towing 1200lb trailer, and loaded w/ family and gear on I5 at 70 mph, mountain passes etc I can shave it down to 350miles per tank.

The Marks kit that Slee sells looks like a good option, I would use a set of 60 hubs rather than those AVMs that come in the kit though..

I'll keep an eye for Active Vacation.

Merry Christmas Mudders!

Yep, here on mud. I 'may' use it for some scout outings. I've towed a scout troop trailer in the past. Maybe that's what you're thinking about. PO had two, finished his and was working on this one. Yes - matching 80 series rims too!

Rear tailgate will come after a lid. Not very usabe for offroading w/o one IMHO.

nice job on the trailer .. as far as the struts go you should have more than enough press. to open and close your lid . the trick is in the placement of the struts.. my lid is a little heavier than yours and im sporting a serengetti trailer tent thats quite heavy as well .. with one little push the lid will open on its own and to close a little more effort, but i pull it down with one hand... i have 2 #150 struts.. mind you i drilled 5 holes in the tralier before i found the right location..

tailgate ?? trailer structural strenght ? in your case if you decide to do it i think you will need some re-enforcing of some kind . because your lid is hinged on the side.. i debated this point and hinged my lid on the end .. much stronger imho.. there was a thread on here where the guy was havin troubles with the trailer twisting cuz the lid was hinged on the side as yours is but if you strenghten the tailgate opening you should be ok.. my tailgate '' frame '' i used 2'' square tube and cut right thru the floor and welded it to the frame of the trailer.. anyway nice job looks good ..

Exactly. I did set up in a bit of a rush and knew there would be some fine tuning.
I have tons of pressure, but what I need is less pressure and play with the Geometry.
If I cut the rear gate completely out there will be issues as right now there is up to 500lbs of pressure to the side from the struts. Hinging my lid on the end is not an option as my 180lb Eezi awn 2200 HAS to fold open off the side. If I end hinge it I will have to fold my tent up every time I want to lift the lid.

Got some pics of your strut set up?

sorry man im just on my way out the door but when i get back i will try and find some decent pics for ya.. my question is why do you need to open the trailer once the camp is set up anyway.. i have found that for loading and unloading it is all i need .. then after camp is set i have all the acsess i need from the tailgate everything is packed in totes and can easily be reached from the tailgate the ones at the far front of the trailer i gotta stretch for but it aint that hard really .. i would personally not want to open my lid every time i needed something, everything would get messed up in the tent.. but thats just my opinion everbody has there own way to roll ... i will do my best to get those pics up later tonight

This thing is used for road trips, so quite often we just pull in for the night and keep going in the am.. so ideally we want all the things we need to access, cooler, food tools etc, to be able to stay inside to reduce set up and take down time. The lid angle is low enough that bedding doesn't really get messed up.

It worked nicely at Surf & Turf since all our gear and cooking stuff was in a totally sealed environment and not blowing away during the noon till dusk sand storms.
