Greetings cruiser heads
I’ve been chasing down a ticking noise on my FZJ80 for too long without driving the truck. I bought it this way, the tick comes in around 1200 RPM off load and stethoscopes loudest at the lower timing cover area (near the PS pump gear, idler, and crank). Rest of the engine sounds good, just a real metallic tick/rattle while not under load just around 1200RPM.
So far I’ve:

  • Installed a new timing chain, tensioner, did a valve job w/ the new head gasket, and checked valve clearance the first time it was all together
  • Changed the main bearings.
  • Inspected the PS pump gear.
  • Inspected the crankshaft gear.
  • Replaced the full timing cover with a new OEM unit (which included a new oil pump).
  • Original timing cover/ oil pump shaft had light lateral play and uneven witness marks on the timing cover where the shaft sits.
  • Confirmed gears all looked good with no major damage.
  • Ran the engine w/o belts with the noise still present (before timing cover replacement)
  • Noise is still present after the new timing cover/oil pump install. (oil pressure is much higher, original was within spec)
  • Planning to re-stethoscope again. Harmonic balancer has visible cracks in the rubber. I also have a new power steering pump gear
  • ALL OEM parts running 10W-40

Hate to add another thread with a mysterious 1FZFE front cover noise but I have so much time and money into putting this thing together twice now. Though I found my eureka moment with the wear marks on the timing cover but no dice. The balancer is definitely original, I plan to put a white outline on it and run it and will stethoscope some more.

Anyone dealt with this, any wizards or witches out there that can allow me to enjoy my FZJ80. Somehow my Discovery II is purring away while this Cruiser sits.

Cheers

I feel like with what you’ve already done this may be a dumb question on my part but have you ran it without belts on?
