Good Afternoon Ladies and Gents,

I've done plenty of research, I've read threads. There are so many answers, thats why MUD is such a great source of information.

Here is the low down, I've never owned a Land Cruiser. I came from a 2003 Toyota 4runner V8, so somethings I don't know if its nature of the beast or if something is going on.

I bought a 1989 FJ62 with 177k The Transmission seems to slip into third gear every once in awhile. Some days more than others, some days not at all. I checked the kick-down cable, and it has minimal slack, but I wouldn't say its tight. I have purchased a FSM just hasn't came in yet. But I do have a digital copy on my iPhone, which is obviously harder to navigate. When driving around 60/65 There is a slight wine coming from the transmission, I throw it in neutral and the noise goes away. Is this normal? Fluid is still clear, I'm going to check fluid level today after doing some reading on how to do it properly. I expect it wouldn't be a bad idea to do a "Rodney Flush" curiosity what fluid would you recommend.

Thanks

I think the conventional wisdom on the board here is that every FJ62 will benefit from a flush, and from the addition of a plate-style transmission cooler. I don't have any particular recs on a transmission fluid; maybe someone else can chime in on that.

I use valvoline max life full synthetic atf and have done the Rodney flush a couple years ago when i switched to the fully synthetic fluid if you the flush get gallons of it takes alot to flush haven't added the extra transmission cooler yet. Nothing eas wrong with my transmission jist did the flush to switch to synthetic.

Get the level right if it's not. If level is good, it's a tough call. A Rodney Flush including dropping the pan, cleaning the filter, and replacing the gasket can't hurt. I had a bit of a whine at certain RPMs in 3rd that was from the transfer case and was heard through the transfer case shifter. When I did my Rodney flush I did all that and changed to synthetic everywhere, including the transfer case. The whine is gone. Presuming you feel the transmission is okay for now, consider doing upgrades to help lower the operating temp of the transmission. You can find all I did to cut my temps in half on the last couple of pages of my restoration thread. Good luck.

BTW, my transmission was rebuilt about 30K miles ago...long before I tackled all these improvements.

I did the Rodney Flush and the Party Trick and it cured my slipping problem. Going on 4 years now. Good luck and keep us posted.

As LCnAZ mentioned, I would drop the pan and clean the metal screen "filter" in there. Fresh fluid is good, but if the flow through that screen is restricted by all the "stuff" that's accumulated in there over the last 177k miles, I'm sure it hinders the performance of the transmission. Simply doing that made all the difference on mine. It's a fairly easy job that you could do for the simple cost of the 2 gaskets (filter + pan), some brake cleaner fluid and of course the new transmission fluid.

Currently drained fluid, cleaned filter, added a new gasket. It has some grey matter, nothing too alarming. About to button it back up and do a Rodney Flush. Wish me luck. lol

Mine was slipping into third as well (under light throttle especially), so I dumped some Lucas Transmission fix in there. That reduced the slippage noticeably. Then I took the truck on a long, hard drive over the Gray Creek Pass (one of the highest maintained roads in Canada), and that must have burned off some varnish or something, because it's stopped slipping altogether. YMMV.

Rodney flush went extremely well, I’ve been trying to get my trans up to temp to check fluid but at this point. WOW, what a night and day difference in my transmission. I’m extremely thankful for everyone’s input. Thank you so much.

Nice. It's amazing what a difference just getting everything freshened up in there can make. Congrats!

That's the first thing I did...change the filter and fluid, and I still have the whine whenever I gun it and hit high RPMS to get going, usually up hills. I feel it shift ok and then the whine all the way until it downshifts again. What's up?

I use Castrol Transynd with an extra tranny cooler and a Rodney flush in mine. I have been using it the last 10 years and my tranny is the same as it was 10 years ago - shifts perfect. I just did another Rodney flush before leaving for vacation to Lake Tahoe and the old Transynd smelled nice and looked clean. No brown or burn smell. I am very happy with it.

Castrol Transynd is expensive, but, it is the best stuff out there for our auto tranny. Napa carries it.
