Full grind / valve job - 7 work days. They had a hard tim sourcing my guides. Ask about shop "b" and "c"
 
Update: I went into the shop and talked to the owner, his suggestion was to check for cracks and simply mill the head because of the miles on my rig 190k, (something about higher compresson, blow-by...blah, blah....) but he also said I should order new head bolts....but since they have only been used once I'll be reinstalling them.....let the valve grind vs just milling debate begin along with the head bolt debate.....

BTW....should get it back next week....better than 4 weeks!!
Also just order a ton more parts for the timing chain and lower pan gasket from Cruiserdan. He also confirmed that the head had never been messed with before, there was gray sealant around the half circle pieces in front of the cams.
 
That's essentially what I did, though they checked the valves with a vac test and said they were good and did not need a valve grind. I had 156k miles on mine. I did put the new valve stem seals in (they are in the HG kit), I would have the machine shop do it though, should not take them very long. I had to buy a valve spring compressor and rig it to work on the 1FZ, it was a pain, since the right tool was not available anywhere in the area and it took me much longer than if I would have had the right tool. I measured all my head bolts with a micrometer and they were all within spec.
 
Removing crank bolt: Now that the head is off and since I've decided to put a new timing chain on, along with fixing the leaking pan, using the breaker bar/starter method, how do I deal with the upper cam gear and chain? I don't want anything to bind up and break stuff, seems like this way might not be possible.....

I have read about the Ingersoll Rand Thunder Gun but its fairly spendy $$$ and I've already spent a load on Mr. T parts, on the fence again!!! :D
 
Just found a thread that utilize a bungy cord hooked to the hood latch to hold the chain tight...seems a little iffy, but it worked for him.
 
I got the head back from the shop. The machine work on the surface seems very rough, is this ok? I don't want to put it on and have another HG failure.

That looks good to install. The groves you see come from the milling process.
 
Slow and steady seems to be the name of the game on this particular HG replacement! I'm well over 3 weeks into it. Last night I was able to get the head and cams installed and timed perfectly. I was really worried about the lower timing chain "bright" link, keeping it on the lower gear seemed to be hard but looks like I did everything right so far. Another point of anxiety for me is the timing chain cover o-rings, the bigger of the two kept popping out of the groove, I ended up putting some FIPG on it to hold it in until I torqued it down, still got my fingers crossed that it didn't pop out. Same thing for the oil pump/pan O-ring....time will tell......
One other item....installing head bolts: While performing the last 90 deg turn on 2 of the head bolts, about mid turn it seemed to get "easy" for a degree or 2, then hard as hell......I scratched my head, hoping they didn't twist or yield!?!

With any luck I'll get it buttoned up in the next few days!!

Maybe I'm fussing too much about all of this but I've got a ton of time and $$$ in this and just want it to work properly when I fire it up again....someday!:p
 
Wow, sounds like something I don't look forward too as yourself. I hope all works well when it gets going again from all the time and money you put into it.

I finally got it finished!! Everything seems to be working fine! A big thanks to all mud members for all the help, the FSM, Idahodoug for the DVD and Cdan. I wouldn't have done this without all the help and information, this site is awesome! However, I will say....I wouldn't want to do another one anytime soon! :bang:
It took me 4 weeks on and off with the help of a great neighbor, its a big job and very glad its done!!:cheers:
 
Good job! I had the same thing happen on one of my new head bolts. My buddy looked at me and I at him like we both dropped a load in our shorts; my wife just walked out of the garage because she knew I just got sick to my stomach and something wasn't right with my other wife. Came back at it with small torque intervals and tightened right up.
