Hi there i am in the market for either the above winch to replace my "Ding Dong Ching Chong 12000lb" winch.
It will be installed on my Daihatsu Rocky.
However i can't decide if i should run the 9.5XP or the M8274.
Let's just compare stock to stock and let's not talking about modding the winch.
I just want a reliable working winch that can pull me through miles of mud in the Malaysian jungles and i plan to do more recreational offroading that competing.
I know all the good points about the M8274 but i'm trying to convince myself to consider the 9.5XP simply because it's lighter, its a low mount (hence i don't need to modify the current winch plate) and cheaper.
Plus when you compare it on paper as we all know that the 9.5XP apparently pulls faster under load as compared to the M8274.
However my main question is how would both winches rate in the real world. Can the 9.5XP be a dependable winch and really pull faster and harder than the ancient but proven 8274 when the going gets tough?
Just want to know everyone thoughts before i bite the bullet and buy a new winch.
Love to hear more reviews from XP owners..
However if i do go M8274 i don't really know what it takes to fit one on to my truck. I'm pretty hopeless when it comes to fabricating stuff.
Would this winch fit to my truck and it's worth every $ and the extra dead weight over the 9.5XP?
Noticed this forum doesn't have a polling thingy.
How much does the above winches cost at retail in your country btw?
To add further,
Are the M8274 and the 9.5XP sealed from the factory or i need to pull our the motor housing to silicon it? Breathers? They have stock breathers or you need to tap/drill one for it?

I tried to search on the forum but couldnt find much info. How should i fabricate the M8274 winch bracket/cradle mounts (the shop doesn't supply them). You guys have any dimension for them? How thick should the steel be? Also is it ok if i just make an "L" if viewed from the side or i better make a "Triangle" or gusset them for strength.
As for the bottom mounting for the winch bracket/cradle would it be ok if i bolt them using the existing Mounting Bolt Pattern: 10.0" x 4.5" (254mm x 114.3mm).

My front looks like this. Might need ideas how to fit the high mount if i go all out. However i wonder if i need to lower the winch mounting further to fit the M8274. Also noticed i might need to chop away the bar where the lights are mounted.

Thanks in advance and excuse the clueless questions of mine.
Cheers.

The 8274 is a Real Man's winch, but it is awfully large to fit on your Rocky - they are deep and tall. You would need a new bumper to hold it, one with more room between it and the front grill.

I know I know...a 100-Series isn't a real man's Land Cruiser either :flipoff2: but no space for an 8274 no matter how great they are (and they are BTW) on my rig. Put the then new 9.5XP on 6-1/2 years ago and have no regrets. Its very, very conservatively rated for pulling power; a Warn tech told me that prior to purchase and its proven accurate advice for me. Its pulled both my loaded ~8,000lb LC with either of my 2,500lb trailers attached up steep loose grades, out of frame deep mud, etc. numerous times...lost count actually. A couple years ago it pulled me sideways out of 3' deep snow at a 90* angle without hesitation...broke the syn line on that one but the winch never wavered.

I overhauled/disassembled/cleaned/regreased it last year...not bad considering the miles and conditions it was subjected to. And its easy to do.

I suggest you mount the solenoid higher in the engine bay as I did to protect it a little better than leaving it low...

I like the new name for ding dong china winch? Having never used a ding dong have to first ask what is wrong with it?

Any to answer your original Question.

There's no doubt the 8274 is the best on the market, but is it suited for everyone?

I would look at the cost 1st.

9.5 is about half the price of the 8274....roughly.

From my own experience...

I originaly bought the XD9000 as it was tried and tested and came recommended for the price. To date has never let me down and its stil half the price of the 8274.

I'd go for the 9.5.

Hi Neal, there's nothing wrong with the China 12000 winch. It so happened someone offered to purchase it hence i'm in the market for another winch.
I know how the low mount performs as i used to have 2 M8000 winch. The Rocky used to run a 1985 M8000 with the old 2hp motor. It pulled me where ever it goes and lasted for 20 years. However i never felt confident using it after its 1st service with our Warn distributor. Always something is shorting or the solenoid keeps dying.
I've always thought our M8000 was pretty adequate and have always pulled well and never failed. It was just slow.
Anyway past is past as it's been sold off already.

Back to the topic.
The main concern is that the heart wants the M8274 but the brains is telling me to get the 9.5XP.

Coz it boils down to its cheaper cost and i dont have to worry about figuring how to mount it.

However if i do go the M8274 route i was wondering if it's as simple as plonking on the winch over the existing winch mounting.
Do you think its a good chance it will fit on my truck where at most i just remove the existing center piece on the bullbar which is now holding the auxiliary lights and high lift jack.

Please excuse the questions as i'm clueless about fabricating.
My truck without the bull bar and a better view of my existing winch mounting plate. You think the M8274 should fit over it or i might still need to extend it out further?

best point .. and totally agre on 8274 been the best winch ever made .. but just 8K ( yeah I know it can be more or even more with snatch block )

For the ROCKY the 9.5 is acceptable. I have seen people fry 8274s and I have heard of people frying low pros. The 9.5 should drop right in there and you are ready for Borneo. The 8274 is pretty heavy, that is my concern.

Can't see the pictures.

Any way, keep in mind how tall the 8274 sits and how much it will block air flow through the radiator. I've never had a problem with my FJ40 over heating but the winch sits pretty far forward and my truck runs cold anyway. If you tuck the winch in tight to the grill it looks like air flow might be a problem on your truck.

Sorry for the late reply. Realised that the photos didn't go through.
I noticed there isn't an edit button on this forum.
Anyway this is the pics i posted of the truck without the bullbar but only with the winch base mount which was built to fit a lowmount.
My only concern if i can use this as a base for a highmount or do i need to extend it to accommodate the high mount.
Hope it's not too daft a question.

i would do a simple "L" plate and install a 8274 ...

remember, a winch is to get your ass out of the trouble your right foot got it into ...

it isn't there to look purdy.

Thanks for the advise. will get someone to fabricate a simple "L" plate if viewed from the side for the M8274.
However would an L plate be fine or is it necessary/must if its gusseted with a "Triangle" if view from the side.
Or just make a "Box" so that the M8274 sits inside it?

My only concern is that if i mount the M8274 on top of my current winch base plate, a portion of the Highmount will stick out/ stick over the base plate. Probably a good 2.5 inches out of it on my guestimate.
Would it be OK in terms of strength? Also concern if part of the winch sticks out would expose, make the winch vulnerable to impacts.
I guess the best way to describe is looking at pictures.

Sorry it's a Landy pic but if i was to mount the high mount on my rocky the front bit will expose over the winch bar plate like the above.
Would its vulnerability be a big concern or as long the "L" winch plate is really sturdy it should be fine? Sorry if it's a lame question.

While considering for a M8274, someone also suggest i should consider this winch.
Another interesting Highmount and Lowmount from Mr. Toyoda.

Your kind thoughts please. Cheers.

the winch plate will double as a bush guard, i have no issues with mine at all. gusset the L then gusset from the bottom of the L down to the bottom of your existing winch plate.
your golden.

Hahah u guys saw the pics of the Aisin winches and got a hard on and vice versa with me over the M8274....
