Found an add online for a Warn 8500... The picture wasn't very clear but I could see that it was 8274. Went to see and it was missing the remote control, had a dead solenoid and the end support had one of the mounting tab was broken. I was able to negotiate it down to $250.

After taking it apart, I found no water on the inside and all the gears in excellent condition.

I'll be rebuilding it with a new lower service kit, brake service kit (might get the Gigglepin brake kit), will need a new clutch assembly and end support assembly. Now as for the solenoids, will probably use the Allbright and I'm unsure about the motor but will probably get a new 4.5hp motor. I will be putting some synthetic line on it to finish it off.

I do have a few question. What's the best way of cleaning and refinishing the housing and the drum and what would you guys recommend for cleaning the brake material off the brake disk?

I'm watching this one as I need to get my 8274 up and running as well.

I use scotch brite pads, and vinegar on the aluminium parts and I use chlorine free brake cleaner for removing the brake dust. For the metal parts bronze wool and light weight machine oil. Your other option for the drum is turning it on a lathe and using emery cloth, or just using emery cloth if you don't have a lathe or access to one.

I now have a few 8274's in my shop including the one on my cruiser. If you wouldnt mind could you psot your parts sources and what they cost as you repair yours?

Do you have access to a sand blasting cabinet? that should clean them up nicely.

FJZ75- thanks for the info, might give this a try if I can't get access to a blasting cabinet.

cody c - still looking at finding the most inexpensive place to get parts up here in Canada. So far I got an online price from warnserviceparts.com and found them a little expensive. Got to do a little more research.

kcustom73,
I could lend you a cabinet if you have the air, I'll even run it out to you, try Twin Equipment on Albion for your 8274 parts, got my 24v motor for my 8274 there, there was talk at the time that they might stop handling warn products, call them first. Also see if you can get a serial number off of yours when you order parts, I recall that there were certain part # differences with build dates.

Kief, the project has stalled a bit while I finish the sheetmetal on the 40. This is just another small project in the world of my 40 rebuild.
