Hi there everyone,
I’m after some help with a starting issue with my crusie.. it’s a 1985 60 series with a 2h

Currently when left overnight it won’t start in the morning.. I’ve tried heating the glow plugs up (they are only 6months old and still good)

The only way I can start it is to spray some “start ya bastard” into the air box then it fires straight away.. once driving it will run fine and I can start it any time all day after that.. next morning same thing over and over..

I was thinking possible air leak to fuel line, the lifter pump was old and leaking but that’s been changed.. can’t see any obvious leaks anywhere but I’ve heard air can be a pain if it’s in the lines..

I know there are lots of similar threads but I can’t seem to find the same problem..

Thanks in advance

Scotty

if you don't get too many replies here you might post over in the diesel section too

Have you confirmed that the busbar is getting the proper voltage during the glow process? HJ60 should have 6 volt glow plugs, the glow controller should hit them with 12 volts for a few seconds, duration depending on coolant temp, followed by the afterglow where it runs at 6v for 30 seconds or so.

Some options, first thing could be very tiny air leak in fuel line.
no starting = engine turns, with some blue/white smoke from exhaust but no actual start (nothing at all or almost?)
-Does it start if you prime it with the hand pump?
-did you clean the little mesh filter located in the in-going line at the hand pump?, water separator cleaned?
-all base lined (new air, fuel, oil filers and stuff) (so no obstructions in the holy unity of air, fuel and heat?)
-compression test, valves adjusted?
-difference in warm engine starting fine and primed engine starting fine, on a cold day no difference in the good starting? (oh, you are from Australia, do you know a guy with a refrigerator cell?)
-edic arm is set to over fuel position when starting?
-governor diagram oke, no higher idle? maybe release the oil, wont harm it and better response to throttle.
-all plugs testing fine? (1 of 6 failing gives terrible start but check with a bucket of boiling water, then should start immediately)

But again mostly and every time it is related to lost priming pressure.

The connecting rod for the edic is 27.2 mm when attached to engine.
total length 28.7Cm
pressed in is 1cm, 20 kilogram to press in, very hard spring.
6 mm wide rod
1 cm thread left
ball on engine is 6 mm
connecting rod between fuel control motor and injection pump.

fuel hoses might look ok from outside visual inspection but maybe replace all, stinks,

and maybe you need do drop the tank, ask help, then ask the help to ask help:

fuel out, some air pressure might release clogging inside tank:

fuel line to engine:

That line first goes trough the water separator, might have some small holes in it:

good luck finding the problem, you have the factory service manual? : all here HJ60 Model/Parts finder, maintenance service PDF 1000 pages

Thanks so much guys.. I’ve got a feeling it’s the tiny air bubbles! I’ll be doing a full check through this weekend sonwill report back..

I had changed the hand pump but also didn’t clean the mesh filter..

👍👍

It really sounds like a superglow fault..

To prove it one way or the other, next start use a Jumper Lead to put 12V+ directly from your battery to the Glow Rail for 5 seconds and then immediately try and start it.. If it fires right up your superglow system is playing up.

I've bypassed by superglow controller and activate one of the glow solenoids directly from a switch in the cab.. Superglow is more trouble than its worth when it starts playing up.
