Here's a few pics of my 1989 FJ62 before the butcher job on the roof.

Here's a pic of the passenger side roof line. It's pretty bad but nothing like the driver's side.

oops...apparently I have exceeded my picture quota.

Anyway...this is my daily driver.

The gutters on the drivers side have almost completely rusted away.

I decided I'd attack the rusty roof line of the driver's side today. I was not expecting the amount of rust I found. The deeper I dug the worse it got.

I assumed I would be able to cut the rust out of the outer roof, weld on some new sheet metal and get on with my life. The rust had penetrated the second interior layer as bad or worse than the outer layer.

I've got it all cut out. The area over the driver's side rear window is heavily pitted but there was no rust through. I grinded as deep as I could there and I'll use some rust converter also.

A couple of questions.

1. Can anyone tell me what guage sheet metal is used for the exterior roof as well as the interior roof underneath?

2. Can anyone tell me if it is absolutely crucial to have gutters on these trucks? Would the doors leak badly without gutters?

Now I need a stiff Jack Daniels and coke.

Thank You,

Remove top and install fourwheel camper.

Wow and I thought that my weekend project of taking out the caulk, cleaning up the gutters and repainting was a chore. Looks like you are a lot deeper into it!

As to the metal: probably 18GA, maybe thinner. I've had pretty good luck so far using 18GA for patch panels, etc., so it should work for the outside. I have no idea as to the inside. Did you get to anything structural?

I'll get some 18 ga. tommorrow and get it tacked on...thank you.

The driver's side a-pillar has rust but I was not about to get involved with that...that's where I stopped.

Yessir, it's time to make it a Tencha.

I secretly keep hoping a large tree branch will fall into the middle of my 62's roof.
Believe me...I spent a lot of time thinking about doing just that...and still might before this is over with.

Probably doing that to mine after all the storms in the south (moved to UT from Birmingham) last April. Two cruisers under two trees. I kept the best one, but the roof's a little dinged.
