I have a 74 fj40 with a dealer AM radio and have a question on the wiring. I have a short blue with no stripes from what I can see coming out of the harness. The wire isn’t long enough to reach the radio and was curious if there’s supposed to be a jumper between the wire coming from the harness to the back of the radio are if my harness isn’t in the correct position to plug it in as is. Any help are photos would be great. Thanks

Small black oval circle look like the ground tab for the cig lighter. Maybe up a jumper wire with a small value fuse to connect your blue wire connector to the radio after you see it has +12V power. Turn on radio - your small value fuse could blow due to actual radio requirement - increase value up to what the real fuse value. If it works - Spice in an extension.

Does cig lighter work. No- add a wire to the tab to a good ground. Yes, well the mount could be providing the ground. The tab could be an additional ground in case the mount was in like fiberglass.

I think the 74 radio was powered from the wiper fuse. It could be that whoever re-wrapped the harness wrapped the radio plug further along that it should have been. If you can confirm that blue wire is on the wiper fuse it would be easy enough to make up a short jumper. That particular connector housing is not correct for the radio, that is for connecting to a stud like the brake pressure switches or the oil pressure sender.

@Coolerman is the one who went through my harness a few years ago. Also is that not the correct connector for that particular radio?

The connectors are very different. The button head connector will slide on the radio power tab and probably work ok but technically is not correct.

I guess I could make a jumper with the correct connector on the end that will attach to the radio. The other question is how do I determine if it is running off the wiper fuse?

Re-coning these old speakers is a gamble. Small tears can be repaired. Beyond that, not much can be done.

I did this one a while back for my truck. The voice coil wires are very small and delicate. Post 182
