Am I Nuts for Considering a Cruiser Purchase in Today's Market?

I know it’s not an LC but in my opinion the 2016+ LXs are the best example of 200 series. That is if AHC is not a deal breaker for you.

To me the deal breaker with LX is not the AHC (though its up there along with the front end styling), but the joystick nav. I really wish it had a normal touch screen like the LC :(

Agreed, I hated the joystick interface.

I’m may have talked my wife into letting me get a White Heritage with all the trimmings. She does not like the bronze wheels 🤷🏻

Wheels will fetch good money.

The same "Toyota" comment was made about MKIV Supras over the years, and yet they went from them being $30k cars to $50k to $80k to $100k to $120k and now upwards of $170k+ and continue to climb. It's all relative... if enough people want it bad enough, the prices will increase.

But will we see vin diesel or the rock or Jason statham drive one out of a plane or something?

I don’t disagree in the possibility but like the Supra was short lived and hallmarked in pop culture and everyone knows it. LCs been going and being made for a lot longer.

New Supra I mean BMW Z4 doesn’t count.

those can be replaced 😏

I may have them painted a semi-gloss black or just sell sell them. I know they are really good wheels and what I would replace them with “ICON rebounds or Fuel Anzas” won’t be as well made. However, I will never go back to 17” wheels again. Too much sidewall for most of my driving.

I don’t blame you.

I am myself convinced 18” is the best all around. They are impossible to find outside of TRD in any usable offset. I wouldn’t blame you if you kept them and painted/spacered them up.

You’d probably end up with a better and more durable finish if you just traded for some TRD Pro wheels off a tundra.

Just in case you weren’t aware, it isn’t a good idea to powder coat forged wheels with standard processes.

My reaction is that it seems high, but checking my research that's one of the best deals I have seen in months, based on the mileage.

I just entered it into Carvana's website to see what they would buy it from you for and they would pay $63,656. That tells me it's not too far off what I would expect. Normally expect Carmax, Carvana and the like to offer 10% lower than dealer retail.

TBH Carvana was by FAR the lowest offer I had when I sold my truck before buying my 200. Just a friendly data point to be aware of.

It's incredibly hit or miss in this market. Carvana offered $2200 more than Carmax on a 2015 SRT Jeep and $650 more on a 2016 GTI within the last month. I know multiple folks who have bought cars recently from dealerships telling them to send their trade to Carvana because they can't compete (this is in Triad of NC). All of this is somewhat comical since the Carvana location in Raleigh cannot currently sell cars due to it breaking state dealership rules.

I'm sure some of it is based on current auction prices and some of it based on inventory of the buyer. Carvana may pay you more when they have a need for a particular make/model/year that they can sell directly vs paying less when they happen to have 3 of those available locally (or regionally) and will likely send it to auction.

That's pretty much my point, you never know who might be willing to pay the most. While I'm sure every vendor has the data drives their decision making, it's interesting to see differing offers.

I know of another Mud member who sold their car to a dealership the other month with a broken windshield. Dealer replaced the windshield, and at last check, the car was being offered at the same price as what they paid for the car when it had a broken windshield (was initially listed ~$1500 more). That dog don't hunt, and this is a dealership apart of one the largest publicly traded conglomerates. How they came to their initial buy offer, who knows. Sure they'd still pocket some fees and hopefully sell a warranty and whatnot, but it would be a very skinny deal if not a losing proposition between the windshield and carrying costs.

Keep in mind the dealer is expecting to make $ on vehicle financing (either through increased loan rates or bank kickbacks), extended warranties, wheel and paint protection, etc. Don't think for a minute that even if they sell for less than they paid that they most likely won't still make $ on the deal.

(Source: my now-deceased scumbag stepfather-in-law worked in vehicle finance for years... I'm not implying all dealer finance guys are scumbags but he definitely was).

Lol I don’t think we even need to cite any sources for the validity of such claims regarding stealerships. I know some are on mud but wow, they are populated by people I would never put any faith in whatsoever. I have some crazy stories first hand myself.

My favorite one was the “oops we made a mistake and need you to come in and resign things”

I was thinking to have them painted not powered coated if that makes any difference. I am waffling back and forth on a lifted BP-51 White heritage w/12.5ga LRA. Ed Martin Toyota has it for sale. It’s a pretty decent deal in todays crazy market. I personally prefer to find another blue LC or a gray Heritage as the bronze wheels look pretty decent with that color. This is how it would look if I buy it an add the Prinsu rack. It has the Naviplus apple CarPlay which apparently sucks from what I hear 🤷🏻

I'm kind of hoping they will throw some 35's on the 200 and jump it from Earth to Mars...

I don't think the production period is relevant here, after all - the Supra nameplate has effectively been around for over 40 years.. it's no LC in that regard, but of course many other factors impact valuations of vehicles, not only its production period. As you said, the cars have been in pop culture and everyone knows about them.

And whether we personally like the new Supra (BMW Z4) or not, may not be relevant to their future values. The MKIV Supra sales numbers were abysmal during its production, yet the values today continue to rise. The new Supra has already made its appearance in the latest F&F movie, so who knows what the future holds...

Back on topic..

I bought my LC in this "crazy market" and happy for it. I specifically only wanted a 2013-2015 LC in black over black with sub-15k miles, 1 owner. This is the only combo that I wanted and would not consider anything else with higher miles, years or colors - personal styling preference. I did not want to travel outside of the city and wanted the vehicle to be local for prior in-person inspection. I have been checking the local classified off and on for the past few years for such example and was lucky enough to find the LC that met all of the above criteria only a few miles away. With the recent profit in the rest of my investments, I was able to make up the difference paid for the LC that more than covered the theoretical difference in price in pre-covid market.

Against my best judgment of
purchasing in this market, I will be posting my new LC next week. 🤪🥳
