I am having a little trouble with a new alternator for my '78 fj40. Two companies I buy parts from sell a 40 watt Bosch for 77-80 40's with an external regulator (For one of the companies this is the only alternator they sell for my truck). Problem is that this alternator doesn't seem to fit. My current alternator has the "ears" straight across from one another, but on the Bosch the "ears" are just slightly offset. Brackets are all original.

Can't quite figure this out....surely others have come across this problem. I am attaching images that show the two alternators together and an image that shows the Bosch installed.

I am calling their tech department tomorrow, but i'd really like some feed back from other LC owners. Replacing the alternator shouldn't be this hard.

Alt problems

I had the same problem last year trying to get an alt for my 1F 1/2, only I have a straight bracket on those models. So it happens to everybody. Looking at the CCOT web site I would say they gave you the wrong model. Here is the model number they list for 9/77-8/80 for the Bosch ALT-7780x302 40 amp. So compare models Good luck man :)

It is a later model alternator. You can either get the later adjuster arm or swap the earlier front case, or you can sent it back and get the right one.

Alternator Rebuild

Check out coolermans site for how to swap the case he did it on his when he moved his 1F alt from the left to the right side

Thanks for the response. CCOT and MAF are selling the same alt for my year. I'll try and get the correct alt for my truck. I thought about swapping the cases, but i'll play that one by ear.
