Hello from sunny Tampa Florida. After much testing, it looks like I need to replace the alternator in my 78 FJ40. I called Toyota and it seems like I the part has been discontinued. Can anyone here give me some insight as far as which aftermarkets / parts store / internet alternators they have had good or bad luck with? I want to do this once and make sure its right.

Thanks

I would look for a good auto-electric shop and have them test it. Sometimes the problem is not where you think and even if it is the alternator, it could be as simple as a bad diode. Ask two or three shops who they farm out their electrical stuff to. I have "tested" two alternators at chain autoparts stores and was told they were baaad, only to take them to a shop and find they were OK.
Many of the countermonkeys do not know how to use the test equipment.

Yeah...I guess I could just have the existing one in there rebuilt. That would take all of the quality questions out of play.
