You don't need a throttle positioner on a desmogged carb. As long as it seals, I wouldn't worry about the gasket differences.

that's great news, less stuff to try to figure out i guess. can i do away with the diaphragm alltogether and just permanantly plug the vacuum port on the intake manifold?

i got everything put back together and she's running. tried my best to do some adjustments, but i think i'm experiencing a vacuum leak somewhere, going to make sure i've got everything snugged down tight tomorrow.
 
after running her gently around town, letting things heat up and cool down, everything needed to be tightened down again, minimized the vacuum leakage and got her tuned properly. i don't think i've ever heard her sound so healthy.
still getting my hesitation problems at higher speeds, so i still got some work to do.
