AirCare Emmissions Testing on Jap BJ74s

Hi again,

Has anyone had experience with British Columbia AirCare emissions testing on a Japanese imported BJ74 turbo diesel (or an other Jap LC trubo diesel for that matter)?

It is my understanding that even though the vehicles have been inspected and licenced that they have not yet passed AirCare and that they must pass within a year.

So, have you encountered problems reagrding this? Obviously this is EXTREMELY important in considering the purchase.

When I lived in BC the only thing they ested for on diesels was opacity. If nothing has changed the 13BTs will have no trouble.

I actually failed with a 3B that ran too clean. It was way under fueled and they couldn't get a reading. The sent me away to have the exhaust replaced ( it was nearly new) because in their view not enough exhaust was making it to the tailpipe. I covered the exhaust with my foot to prove that there was no leaks but they wouldn't be convinced. I gave up, parted the truck and left the province. In retrospect it would have been easier to just turn up the fuel a bit.

My wife used to work at aircare and she told me the test they do for any diesel is a total joke. It is impossible to fail because they are set up to test for gas engines. As for telling you to get a new exhaust maybe you should have gone to another testing station.

It IS possible to fail Aircare with a diesel, as I've heard of at least one BJ74 that failed...but it had some issues with the fuel system and is not typical of the JDMs. And Bruce is correct, the only test that they still do on diesels is opacity...and I've taken mine through twice and passed with flying colours.

You'd have to be very smokey indeed to fail the opacity test.

That wouldn't be a bad idea at all. I love VI, just that all my family and friends are mainlanders. I could spend a lifetime in the rivers, lakes, and beaches of VI.

The regulation for ICBC air care on imports is that they are exempt for the first "term" of insurance or up to 1 year. If I imported a car into the BC lower mainland and did not air care it I could operate it for 1 year if I bought insurance for a 1 year term. If I bought insurance for say 6 months then I would have to get it air cared to re-insure after that term is up. If I had a 1 year term then sold it to you after 1 day then it would require air care to be re-insured.

Just had my Bj60 aircared.
It was a freaking joke!
They changed things this year.
No more driving test, they only sniff it when it is idling!!
Took about 10 seconds then I was done.
Way below maximum allowable.
