My hot air / cold air flap in my air box intake isn't able to function properly due to my powder coater coating the sh1t out of the whole air box. The coating is thick - done at the same time he did my frame. It's not not small-delicate-moving-parts-thick.

My bad for not specifying.

Anyway, what do I need to do here?

What looks like the temperature coil broke off when I tried to manipulate to free it up. Flap is stuck closed so only hot air intake.

You can tell removing those screws is going to require a lot of dtilling and tapping. It's thick!

When I installed a header on my I was able to get a plate that bolted to the underside of the intake manifold that was connected to the cooling system to warm the intake.

I think I got it from SOR.

So how does the intake work? I imagine it pulls cold air when it is hot out, and warm air when it is cold. Yes?

On my old Mini Cooper that had a cold air intake, the supercharger worked better with cold air, especially when hot and muggy.

But, this is essentially a tractor engine. These things are not high performance.

If I only have 1 temp air, I'd assume that cold is better????

From my 1977 Emission Control manual:
This system is designed to keep the temp of the air drawn into the carb as constant as possible regardless of the ambient air temp. When starting in cold weather, the thermo wax contracts, pulling the cold air inlet closed, so that as the engine is warming, that air is drawn into the carb.
In warm weather the thermo wax expands, pushing the cold air inlet open so that it now pulls fresh air into the air horn, through the inlet hose and into the carb, instead of the hot air of the engine compartment.
