Adding remote start 2013 is there an OEM option? (1 Viewer)

My wife wants a remote start in her 2013 LC. I am hoping to have it installed for Christmas next month.

Is there an OEM add on option?

I tried the bump the lock button on the fob three times and hold... no go.

One of my rules is NOT to add aftermarket alarms or doo-hickies to the factory wiring system if possible but mama needs a remote starter.

If no OEM option exists, is there a system that is reliable/? We had a Viper years ago and it could start the car from about 2 states over, pretty slick setup.

are you sure you don't already have the remote start? check under the hood there should be a sticker there.

I thought they came from the factory with remote start. Mine has it.

Hit lock. Hit again within 1 sec. Then hold lock.

Yeah I have tried the factory setting. Nothing. I haven't looked for the stick. Any idea where the sticker lives?

open the hood and look on the surface of the underneath side of the hood. my recollection is that it's a warning sticker stating vehicle is equipped with a remote start.

I had Compustar G15 remote starter systems installed into my 2014 LX and wife's Corolla some ~4 years ago. Have been very happy with them.

True, but I think it’s the only method that doesn’t defeat security. Don’t all the others require a fob be left in the cabin and then supplement with their own security layer? I’d take the security of the OEM solution even though the secondary start cycle is annoying.

All modern remote starters will have that behaviour, OEM or not. There's no way around this with modern vehicles.

Not true at all. No fobs/keys left in my LX or wife's Corolla, both are equipped with Compustar G15 remote starters. I've never even heard of leaving a fob inside.

Interesting. How then do they defeat the immobilizer on the 200? This is a root-level security that requires a handshake with the fob before EFI is enabled.

Edit: in reading Compustar’s page it sounds as if it’s programmed to emulate a Toyota fob and then added as a ‘Key’ via Techstream. So while there’s no physical fob stored the Compustar module emulates one and thereby defeats the OEM immobilizer. True, Compustar takes over the security role as well as adding additional features.

I still would lean toward a proven and reliable OE solution even if it does come with the annoyance of a restart upon entry. I do get that others may have different preferences and don’t mind the aftermarket component.

I'm not sure how/what they do. I did have to re-do the installation on my wife's Corolla due to poor original install, and it was simply a half-dozen wires that were tapped into OEM wiring, plus a control box, and an external antennae unit. I'd imagine the LX has the same thing, although I haven't had a need to dig into it. The shop that did the install is very unlikely to have Techstream, it was just a run of the mill car stereo place. Even the indy mechanic that I just came from (and who services both our vehicles) does not have Techstream (I asked this morning).

In my LX I do need to have my original key card (or fob) present in order for the LX to open doors, start, etc., so whatever may have been done to the Compustar unit is definitely not a 1-to-1 clone of the original fob.

Yeah, it might not be Techstream per se that they use. I believe locksmiths have some third-party application they use to add/replace keys. Probably a similar solution.

I suspect that modern vehicles are designed to allow a remote starter to tie in, but not fully take over the safety/immobilization features. If they were able to take full control (like on older vehicles), we wouldn't have the engines shutting down when the door is opened.

My 2020 Ram has OEM remote start. Truck does not shut off when door opened.

Wifes CRV doesnt shut off when door opened either (Honda OEM remote start)

agree. honestly i've never taken the time to track down where the actual device is located but i got the manual as well. i'll have to pull that out and see who the manufacturer is if not toyota.

Agree. All of our vehicles have remote start. The only one that shuts off when a door is opened is our 200.
