Adding JDM side marker lights and turn signal mod (1 Viewer)

Checked it out on my way back from walking the kids to school.

They do only come on when you turn on the blinkers and they remain un-lit until then.
Again, personally that's the way I would have it for the maximum chance of it catching people's attention when turning/changing lanen (IMO).

Also, I got to have both sides/lenses to "click" back in their place after a couple of tries. :hillbilly:
When removing the lense, be sure to push it in the direction of the larger tab AND THEN pull it out, perpendicular to the sheet metal (Hope that makes sense). If you do that you should be able to avoid getting a nasty gash on your fender like someone did.

An observation and a question....

My question is this - I installed the lights, and they are holding, but I expected a "click" when they were flush with the body. But if I put too much force on the sheet metal, it (temporarily) dents inward. Is there a trick to keeping it in its present shape while pushing on the lenses? I can't reach the lens from inside the fender, so that's not an option.

I even tried keeping the tab bent inward (using a long screwdriver), but it didn't "click" and I don't think there's any real force on the rubber gasket.

I'm concerned that the fixtures are going to pop out under any kind of abuse.

This problem is going to be compounded if/when I eventually rhino-line the whole body.

Any thoughts?

My JDM 80 series side signal lights tend to pop out on occasion and hang there by the wires. Never really looked yet as to why that happens, I'm just too used to s*** falling off my 40 that it hasn't really bothered me I guess :)

Based on what MOT said I think the procedure to install the light would be reverse of how he gets them out: stick one side in and push in at an angle until the other side has enough space and pops in. Don't push the assembly straight in.

That's what I was doing. I may take another kick at the can tomorrow if it's not raining (no garage :crybaby:).

Hi Boyd!!
How are ya?

Mot :)

Doin' great! Thanks for all the parts:)

It sure would be nice if my rear seats would recline.

Do you still have the 2nd row seat brackets in oak?

I may be interested:D

Boyd,

I've got a grey pair but I don't think Toyota has discontinued the oak ones, yet.

If you order a pair, I'll order me a pair as well for I want to install them on my rig in the US. ;)

PM me if you're still interested! :hillbilly:

I ended up putting 1157 LED bulbs (3 watt) in the front marker lights. They are plenty bright and can be seen easily from the sides.

I have a pair of brand new crystal clear fender-mounted turn signals lens from Mot for sale if anyone is interested. PM me offline.

Only one problem so far with this mod I haven't gotten around to fixing. On mine, when you hit the brakes, the front markers get brighter. So until I can add another ground or a diode somewhere, I have front brake lights.

... And that is a bad thing? lol. Light it UP :)

Clear markers

Hi - does anyone know where I can get some clear side markers and front turn signals for a 94 hdj81 - looking for good quality at fair price, thanks.

Contact MOT here on mud - see post #27 above.

After years of wanting to do this, and six months of having the markers on the shelf, I finally dove in and installed. These definitely remove the inherent blind spot for those around us when signalling.

Used the Safari snorkel template to double-check the location. Drilled, step-drilled, then cut with a Dremel.

Filed to fit, then primed and painted.

can you please make a template for the hole on each side and post in , I need to know how to cut it.

The template I used was for the installation of the Safari Snorkel, which is huge. Worked for both sides. I guess I could see if there is a way to stencil it onto some cardstock that could be passed around. Not sure if there would really be a good way to turn it into a digital template, but open to ideas.

The wiring is easy enough to run through the fender. If you reach inside there are access holes that help to feed the wiring through. The last pic is where I tied all the wiring together. Two leads from the new side markers and a jumper from the front turn to the side turns. I will probably swap out the dual filament plug with an OE brake/running light plug later. These were from a GM and they fit but not great. All the signals flash and the running lights work on the side turn signals.

Does the side marker light need to be changed to a dual filament plug? Or does the extra voltage provided by the blinker cause the dual filament bulb to illuminate when the blinker voltage spikes?
