Adaptive cruise control retrofit (1 Viewer)

Adaptive cruise control I’ve never gotten into because I’m already in control looking straight ahead when I’ve got the cc on. The cc stalk is great for incrementally slowing down and speeding up.

Now if we are talking about blind spot indicators, rear back up cameras, and corner sensors then I am 100% on board. My wife has the Lexus RC and it has all those those and I freaking love it.

Having a car rush passed you while backing up, and getting a warning beep every time without fail, is a very nice security blanket. As our trucks get taller and stuffed with more crap it gets increasingly harder to see everything. My 48 year old eyes love the assist on the back up camera when I’m trying to judge depth. The corner sensors are unbelievably handy when you just want to squeak out a tight turn and not sure about your bumper corners, especially with two different trucks with two different lifts and bumper setup.

Hate the adaptive on our work tundra, tried to use it last road trip and I couldn't stand it. The thing I loved about my 80 the most was taking it for a drive. I don't need the ride driving me around.

there is a way to turn the adaptive portion off but I don't remember off hand, I think that you hold down the cruse button on the stalk for a few seconds

As far as cost goes, they're not too expensive, relatively speaking ($3000) considering how expensive our bumpers are and other stuff we put on our rigs some may see this as a benefit.

adding 3k to what should be a minor damage repair, such as someone backing into the truck and cracking the grill, seems like a lot. fun fact with adding a plate bumper or metal bumper of any kind no guarantee that it will work due to having a large metal object near the grill and sensor area.

If someone was hacker savvy enough, they probably could combine the 80 abs with cruise control and adapt the newer crawl control feature that is on toyota 4x4s

as a project or a chalange to make it workif thats your deal all the more power to ya, i can get you ewds of you know what vehicle the parts came off of. it would have to be designed as a stand alone system as most of that is all tied in with the abs system and i think it would start to get cost prohibitive if you were trying to go the all toyota route. as for making crawl control a thing in the 80 now were talking

Blind spot indicators if I recall would be extremely cheap and simple to install. Its been a while since Ive researched it. If I recall less than 100 bucks.

Heck, my cruiser had them installed from the factory. They’re called properly adjusted mirrors.

The 18 tundra I drive all day for work has the front radar sensor crap. It beeps really loud and attempts to brake if it feels you are going to hit something in front of you. It goes off all the time just driving down the road with no one around. Scares the crap out of you like you missed something and are about to die. Guess it keeps you on your toes. It also shuts off in the ran because it can't deal with the rain drops on the sensor. Kinda feel like that would be the best time for it to work

My rigs are not daily drivers and most road time is getting to the offroad places. I personally don't need / want these electronic gizmos. In fact, I'd love to trade in electric windows for manual ones. Already have manual seats in one of the 80s and would gladly change to manual in the other. KISS is what a Land Cruiser should be.

I believe the toyota systems are a little different compared to the Lexus ones. I've never had issues like that and I had a 16 and now a 19. Or your work truck has it's settings to the most sensitive OR you're a crazy driver

I'd be all over this, I don't even need it to brake, just vary my speed and maintain a distance to the cars in front of me. Adaptive cruise is the only new car feature that I really lust after in my 80.

theres too many variables that can cause issues, road conditions, mods to the vehicles, if the updates have been performed, if the correct windshield is installed, if the vehicle has been in an accident or has aftermarket body parts installed among others. toyota and lexus share a lot of parts as Toyota owns lexus and as a result they use the same suppliers for parts.

The windshield is a big one. A lot of our clients who crack a windshield and go through insurance will find that after it's fixed the system doesn't work only to find out that their insurance tried to save some money and gave them an aftermarket windshield. What I tend to find when clients complain is that the settings are on the most sensitive.

The windshield is a big one.

I had a cust that called up for a front camera adjustment as they had the windshield replaced. came in with the camera hanging by the wire and said the windshield guy couldn't figure it out can I install it. I get it and struggle with it for way longer than I care to admit to, call my team lead over and hes struggling with it. swapped a camera from another car, same deal. finally figured out wrong windshield was installed and the camera couldn't even be mounted and that's why the camera was hanging by the harness. I tell my writer who tells the cust who in turn starts to cry (literally) because now their out the money for the windshield, new Toyota windshield is 1200 and they still have to program the camera. turns out thw windshield was installed by a friend or acquaintance of her husband who did it cash and wasn't returning their called for well over a month to finish the job and take care of the camera. I felt bad for her but there wasn't anything that I could do, I think that I just pulled the camera down and boxed it up for the new windshield install.

Necroposting to see if anybody has progressed with this? Surprisingly, no one mentioned OpenPilot from Comma.ai, which is beyond ACC and more like BlueCruise/Super Cruise. Their discord has a section for old cars where some folks have succeeded with 70s-era vehicles. The major parts needed for a retrofit would be electric power steering with a module than can accept commands over CAN, and something like the Bosch iBooster for brake control.

I’m still deciding between getting a 80 or 200 series, but if I land on the 80 I will be attempting this in the future.

80’s cc actuator is a quarter century old and no longer available.

The simpler method i would think would be to have someone that knows arduino to build you a kit. The original forum posts I pasted earlier are informative in doing this.
