I started today on the rebuild of my 97 A343F transmission with the oil pump. Upon opening it up, I was shocked to see what looks like a fairly large piece of steel broken off one side of the stationary pump body. I have attached a few photos of what it looks like.
However, after looking at it more closely, I am no longer sure it is broken. For one thing, if a hunk of steel that big broke off, surely it would have caused a big problem in the transmission. The other thing is that it almost looks like it was made to be that way for some reason. But if so, it could only work if the drive pump in the center rotates counterclockwise all the time (from this viewpoint), which I have no idea about. If it rotates clockwise every tooth hits that sharp edge along the way.
Can someone please confirm if a piece has indeed broken off or if that piece is made that way?
