Performing a drain and fill (just the pan) on my 2002. I noticed that on level ground with a cold trans that the dipstick showed above the hot notches. I drained out about 1 liter a little bit at a time until the dipstick read just barely above the cold has marks. After draining the rest of the fluid in the pan I have 2 liters that was drained.

I see ranges from 2 liters on a pan drain to over 3 liters. Sort of scratching my head as to how it has this much in it. Drain plug came out super easy and no crush washer (might be in one of the containers).

Should I just refill until the dip stick measures correctly? Lots of threads discuss a refil with the exact amount, but this seems like it was an overfill.

Thanks.

Are you checking the fluid level with the engine on and transmission in Park?

No, monetary brain Fart.. doh!!

Does one also need to cycle through each gear, letting it sit in each gear for a bit and then resting in park before checking?? Does our manual tell us anything about this?

Just curious. I know on a handful of other vehicles I've worked on it tells me to cycle through the gears first but not sure if it matters or not.

Did engine on / in park solve your problem / correct the level on dipstick?

Yes the FSM specifies to cycle through the gears in park.

In order to elevate the temperature, in any of the drive gears (D, 3, 2) you can press the accelerator while holding the brake to heat up the fluid. This occurs because of the slippage in the torque converter allowing the engine to rev but the transmission output to be held still.

Yes. All good. Cycled through gears.
