Watch carefully how the insulators come apart where the power comes into the glow rail. I screwed those up once and blew one of the main fuses in ball of smoke. Also, clean all the contact surfaces really well to make sure the high current can get through. Don't loose the little nuts that hold the glow rail on the glow plugs.
 
The new glow plugs should come with the little nuts for the glow rail. Those look like the same Bosch ones that I got.
 
on mine I put a bit of high temperature grease on the glow plug threads.
apparently that helps when they need to be removed.
my engine is the first gen 2lt.
 
Started the long weekend by doing the rear brakes. See what else happens this weekend.

Swapped out the glow plugs. 2 big pluses. First, when they put the newer head on it back in 06, they must have changed to a different type head to hold the buzz bar on. Came off really easy, no probs there and then when I started it back up...no ball of smoke out of the fuse box!
TYJ..:D. If I get an R drill bit, the EGT sensor will probably be next. I tried to get the fan clutch loose and just couldn't do it. I'm a :zilla: with one of these :wrench:... I guess I'll wait on the fan swap.

Nice work Jimmy!! Only way to get good with the tools is to keep on working with them! A bit at a time.
 
on my lj, I ordered new blue fan clutch from toyota, once on truck, didn't seem to do much better. then took apart old one and filled it with 10000cst silicone oil and also changed the opening temperature.
just be careful not to destroy the screw threads. I found it quite easy to fill the clutch and now car has the filled clutch on. the new toyota one is back in the shed!
theres clearly better cooling, but still the temperature is raising above the thermostat spec, gets to 87 instead of 82 (its 82 thermostat in), so I am considering a tridon high flow thermostat next….
 
So, another day and decided to tap my EGT sensor post turbo like many have done. Cutting threads...yet another thing I've never done. But alas, it really wasn't too hard (despite my fears) and in went the sensor.

While I was in there and took the heat plates off, I realized I could reach the EGR pipe at the back of the manifold and get rid of the Big UFO on the intake side. SO.....Yank!

Capped it off with the same block that was on the UFO end, my power to weight ratio just went up! LOL

OK, So hunting season is long over but the cold weather has me going slower on projects. So I had Torfab do the knuckle rebuild and add AVM manual hubs because only one side was working with the electrics.

Working great but, only 4 of 6 bolts lined up. Hmmm. I'm watching them closely.... I also chickened out and had them do a new timing belt, water pump and idler and tensioner while it was in the shop.
 
AS soon as it warms a little and stays dry, I'll be switching to Evans Waterless with new hoses. In the meantime, I had my youngest mod me up a gauge holder to fit were the altimeter and temp gauges were. Nothing new here, just copied AIrheadnut's version. This one is stainless and I'm trying to decide to go with the Stainless look or go Black.

Did you save the parts? I could try to help you get yours working again, or if you would like to sell them, I'll take them off your hands for spare parts....
 
So today I decided to change the gasket on top of the Venturi. It's been leaking and I finally ordered a few gaskets from Amayama. Well, I pulled the Venturi and what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a metal gasket for the underneath side of the Venturi! :frown: How did I miss that back when I took out the throttle plates? Apparently, a PO misread the schematics. I'm now wondering how this may have affected my airflow and if it had anything to do with the smoking at idle after warmup? I guess I'll find out when I get her back out on the road. Wait, maybe I did it when I put it back together? :doh: Back to the garage!!! ............Nope, wasn't me being forgetful,:hmm:, not that it would have been the first time I did something like that.

Oh, and I thought I would show the gauges lit too.

Had a few minutes this afternoon and the new silicone tubing arrived so I hooked up my boost gauge. Oh, and you'll notice I got rid of the Oil catch can and now just drop it strait to the underside of vehicle.
