A new one on me- Nobody will install my glass!

OK- a local automotive glass vendor came out yesterday and installed the side and rear glass (I had the doors done already). They had no problems, till we got to the windshield. It seems the windshield gasket is 2 piece, with a "locking gasket". That was not ordered by customer. So, we could not install the windshield- Part is on order and SOR's catalog shows very clearly to order both pieces. Glass guys will be back to finish the job next week after part arrives.

But, with all the problems that glass companies had installing FJ40 glass, these guys made it look easy. And, they were relatively inexpensive compared to the other I talked with.

I don't recall what yr the 40 is. It happens, i had friend who was a glazer, we cut 1 windshield and it broke during the install and had to cut another. From what I remember, the early style windshield frame with the wipers on top uses the gasket with the locking strip. The frame with the wipers on the bottom uses a 1 piece gasket. The glass between the 2 frames are different too.

In the past I've also found shops who cut glass and install the glass, so if they break it, it's on them.

depending on what size you need, I just had one made and while it was cut exact to the one I took out, it didn't fit the Toyota gasket I had and they didn't have a good source for a gasket that would work. long story short, I had another piece of glass cut to fit the gasket I had.
I'm not sure on shipping but if your ever in the area or want to take a drive, let me know

I was a novice, but I was able to install my windshield with two helpers. It wasn't easy, but we got it in! Took about twenty minutes per windshield, start to finish. I installed two windshields, one on my '66 and the other on my '70. See my thread for the approach I used:

FJ40 windshield install

Here is an old thread that is still out there.

Last time I installed a 40 WS it took longer to get the 6pack for my helper than it did to install the WS

Place the gasket on glass, wrap string around the gasket with a little soap on it

Place in frame and pull string carefully while gently pushing the glass into place.

Its probably a 30 min job

If it's a one piece gasket use the "rope trick". Two piece gasket is a little more involved.
