It has been about 5 years since I first wanted the OEM cyclonic filter. Not so much because I need the filtering capacity but more so I could fit a full size aux battery in the AHC LX. Peter (Moooooo) was helping me with leads and salvage yards in Australia but I was never able to get a hold of one. I pretty much gave up on it. Peter didn't though!

The cyclonic air box is pretty cool, actually. I have had this type of set-up in my 70 and 80 series. How it works, as I understand it, is the centrifugal force draws the particulates to the outside of the round box and the cleaner air is sucked into the center. The particulates spin around but eventually fall to the floor of the airbox where there is a "tuna can" that collects it. The tuna can is easily accessible from outside the box and can be dumped without removing the filter.

There are two rubber one-way valves on the bottom where dust can escape (dust relief valve, as it is called). The OEM air filter is also washable.

I don't have it installed yet as I need to get a few more parts including the filter. But here are a other people's pics of the filter installed. As you can see, it makes room for another battery behind the PS headlamp. And there is room behind the airbox in a LHD 100 for even another battery if one wanted. Yes, keen eyes will notice the PS reservoir is in a different location. It is mounted to the aux battery tray.

Special thanks to Peter for hooking me up. If there is enough interest in the same set-up, maybe Peter can scour the local salvage yards for more air boxes! New, they are very expensive.

Very interesting and cool but is it better than the US stock air box? More power?

How much was shipping from Aussieland?

Looks great! I'd be interested to see the manifold pressure drop compared with the 'deck plate mod' that bamachem did.

Well, I don't have the means to measure flow rates but I think it would be a safe bet to say this filter won't clog as easily. Shipping from OZ is not cheap at the moment. Expect about US$105-135. Seamail will be $80-90 (my best guess) but could take months to arrive.

Very cool.

If you wheel and drive your rig through the s***, this is the only air filter you should really have in your rig.

[a cyclonic OEM snorkel would be slightly more cool than this on a Hundy]

Beno, any chance Toyota has these air filters (17801-17020) already available in the US? I can get it... but maybe you can get it faster/easier.

what's domestic filter supply like?
Clarify that? If you mean what filters can we get stateside that will fit... well, I'm working on that. However, the filter is washable and since folks in OZ are using the same filter for 50,60 70k KM's. I'll just buy two and call it a day. I'm going to check to see if the 80 series filter is compatible.

Hmmm...do I smell a group buy coming on? :D I, like you, hate the NA intake filter system we have; it clogs in about 30-minutes up here in the land of dust .

Good job hoser (and Peter!)!

That's because you trimmed your fender liner and DONT have a snorkel. Ever since I put the snorkel on I dont need to change my filter anywhere near as much as before.

I think Dan needs the cyclonic air box and a snorkel!

That's why I'm a trailer guy...to haul the cases of filters around on our runs

He would email from time to time and was determined to find me one. Last month, he put me in contact another bloke, Darren, who had switched to a K&N intake.

I'm glad i finally found one for you!!

I think that without a filter gauge like Hoser linked you are likely replacing filters way too often.
