Ok - I have searched on this and have not been able to find a definitive answer (although one may not exist). So here is the issue:

Stats: '94 FZJ80, 114K miles

Problem: Starts and runs fine (no belt squeal), but when I press the A/C button to turn on the A/C I get a wretched squeal. The AC does blow cold. I checked under the hood with the engine running and the compressor clutch freewheels fine, but when the compressor in engaged, I get the ear piercing squeal. I fear my compressor (likely the original) may be dying a slow death

Any thoughts? Has anyone had a similar experience?

Opinions appreciated - Thanks

Belt squeal?

If you're really lucky, it might just be incorrect belt tension.

Yup, I'd check the belt--it may just have worn out and/or needs tightening, but if you're going in to tighten, you may as well replace it. PS: you're likely to snap off a bolt or two from the pan if you have rust.

It could also be your clutch, but I'd check the belt first--that's the most likley.

I just replaced my slightly noisy belts and installed a new AC idler pulley (someone rounded the nut ) and it made things quiet again :)

I'm With you Eduardo .. idler pulley ..

The compressor could be trying to sieze or the system could be over-charged or a loose or worn belt.
