I have a 99 Landcruiser that recently overheated due to a coolant leak. I fixed the leak but now the, engine runs rough and check engine light came on. Computer codes say that there are Cylinder 3, 4 and 6 misfires. I also did a compression test , and got 105, 100, and 120 on 3 cylinders (minimum is 142).

Long story short looks like I need a rebuilt or used engine. Any recommendations on where to find one?

Also, is it worth fixing the top half of the engine. I think it's over $5G to do that.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave (San Francisco)

Unfortunately only 5 cylinders were tested. Given that the compression was so low on 3 cylinders, the shop said there was no point in checking the other cylinders. Here are the compression results:

Cylinder 1 = 155 psi
Cylinder 2 = 105 psi
Cylinder 4 = 100 psi
Cylinder 6 = 120 psi
Cylinder 8 = 145 psi

Thanks, Dave

if it were mine i would tinker with it a little before i gave up on it. how bad did it overheat? you might try some seafoam in the intake a few times and some Marvel Mystery Oil soaked through the spark plug holes on all eight for a couple of days then turn the engine over with plugs out to remove all of the excess before you reassemble and try it. could just be some stuck rings.

If the rings are stuck, wouldn't oil (or a bunch of pressure) be blowing out of the crankcase vent? Honest question, not trying to be argumentative, I'm not sure if I understand crankcase ventilation fully.

not saying the rings"are" stuck but by the findings of the compression tests means the compression is going somewhere. could be baked carbon restricting the rings or valves. just a possibility and worth a try.

I think at this point...I'd do a leak down test. If it fails that...then go shopping for a good, used, low mileage replacement engine.

If it was me I'd want to check all 8 cylinders myself. A compressor tester isn't that expensive, maybe 25 bucks, and not hard to use.
