For the last 10 years I've always sold my vehicles once they reach 200k. Well, the time came a couple days ago when I cracked 200k with my 98 hundy. Over the last few months, my wife and I debated on buying another one with low miles but after not much though we both decided... "WHY?" This truck has been insanely reliable, is very comfortable, runs perfect, and still looks good. It's got another 200-300k in it easy. So we decided to give it a little refresh instead and keep it for awhile. We did all of the major and minor services (all fluids, tb/water pump, plugs, filters, lubes, etc...)We had a little bodywork done on the rear hatch where I backed it into a dumpster a few months ago, and I decided to change the chipped up headlights and stuff. The following pics are the before and after really. Not much of a write up because when I get busy doing something I forget to take pics along the way. It's very straight forward though.

Bonus pic of where bodywork was. Mostly debaged now, was going to do a new style Land Cruiser emblem that covers the whole popout on the hatch, or maybe leave it debaged. What do y'all think?

Ok, so a few things I ran into along the way.

The Sub Panels must be painted.

Remove all the lights, grill, and bumper cover. The trim piece that goes between the lights/grill and bumper must be removed by taking out the 2 pop rivets on each side.

Then the fenders have to be trimmed a little. The portion of the fender where the top pop rivet was has to be trimmed off at an angle enough for the new lights to clear. Hold the new lights up to see how much you have to trim. Also, the edge of the fender inside where the side marker was has to be timmed back all the way around the edges. I took off roughly 1/8" all the way around and sanded/primed/painted all the edges I cut. (sorry, no pics of this although it was likely the best part to take them. Like I said, I get on a roll)

Install new retainer bracket. On the sides where the rivets were, I just put a low profile bolt with a lock washer and nut on the back.

Some other trimming was done the to the inside of the bumper skin (if you have a newer bumper/grill you probably wouldn't have to do this), there are some clip on plastic supports underneath. You will see what has to be trimmed when you try to put the skin back over. Go ahead and attach the bumper back on.

The middle bumper support on top has an additional arm above it that used to attach the old bracket. That upper arm must be moved/removed for the new grill to fit later. I just bent it down and out of the way.

Mount headlights, mount sub panels with the clips and screws you bought, mount grill, donezo.

A couple extras I did were sand down and paint the center rungs of the '06+ grill color matched to the truck (and painted the "T" logo to match my rear one that I matched to the bumpers. It kinda reminds me of the older grills and it looks good on my black truck. I also added a 5000k HID kit.

If anyone has any questions, holla. Sorry for the half steppin' write up, but it was really easy.

no you dont, you need a slee front.

Maybe once I rip the bumper off doing some dumb sheat. :hillbilly: I decided not to lift the truck for now so it can still get in the garage. It's my wife's rig, and we use the rack on top regularly as well.

Is it me or is the toyota emblem on the 06 grille bigger?

You'll need more blue paint. Too bad they dont make GTO covers for the newer, larger headlights.

can you remove the sub panel below the headlights, without removing the headlights? if so, how?

Like the 06 headlights!

Like the 06 grill and emblem!

Do not like how the chrome surrounding the 06 grill goes all the way down to the bumper now. I liked it better when it was inline with the headlights and the trim piece ran between the bumper and grill.

x2 on getting the 06 LED tail lights next!

On the newer models, yes. Remove the grill. Remove the retaining screw, and each side pops out.

On the '98 until whenever the grill changed, no. The sub panel on the older ones is also the bracket that holds it all together (including mounting points for the headlights).

Ok, I'm a moron. I was just outside working on my LC and noticed my 04 already has the grill that goes all the way to the bumper. So the only different between my 04 and this 06 is the grill/emblem design and the one-piece headlights.

Now I wonder if I could install the one-piece headlights without anything else since mine is already most the way there...

i believe you will still have to replace the filler below the headlights, but the grille shouldnt be an issue. I'm not the authority on any LC specific panels though. :meh:

The Filler Panels are different on the 06+. As far as the retainer bracket goes, I am not sure. You'd need to cross reference the part#'s for that bracket between the years and if it matches you'd not need to mod your fenders most likely.

-For awhile DEPO was selling 06+ look alike lights for '05 and older models that looked stock but I couldn't find them anywhere.

Yeah those customer projector lights are the way to go if you want HID!
