Hi, I'm an 80 owner, new on the 100 forum. Looking at buying a 100 (stock) for the wife's DD. I want the RR locker because it will probably be mine one day, also, want an older model to get it cheaper. Trying to stay around $11-12K or so. Is there anything "bad" about the 98 being the first year of the redesign. Any reason to buy one over the other? I have searched, but haven't found a lot addressing this subject. Thanks, Dan.

Bought a 98 3 years ago for my wife's DD and it's been a tank. I too am getting it from her when my lease is up. I would agree with Trunk Monkey - lack of rear AC is not optimal, but we've managed okay with the kids, even for road trips. Look at all the links to the 90K-100K services so you know what you're getting into.

KBrummer- what do you mean by "Tank"? Good or bad?

not all 99's have rear air so be careful. If you will use the 3rd row I would make sure and get one with the rear air. Also, you might be able to find a 2000 for close to thast price if you are patient. Alot of safety features added in 2000, search as the rear locker vs. ATRAC and VSC have been discussed b/f.

The only - to 2000/2001 is the potential tranny issue that's popped up here and there; probably still unlikely but something to consider in the bargaining process. Extended warranty might be more important on these.

I have a 1998 with rear air. However, the air is located on the mid consol section between the two front seats. Is this not considered rear air?

Nope, the '99 had the option for a rear AC system that runs up in the roof, has vents on the 2nd and 3rd rows and a control above the 2nd row DS.

My '99 has the controls above the DS 3rd row...

Nit picky. It's right above the 2nd row headrest, forward of the 3rd row.

For a second there I thought they had two placements...depending on whether it was ordered with/without the 3rd row seats.

Dan's the one to answer this.

Why? Is it possible that on the 98's and 99's that it IS better to not have the rear locker? It's a given that on the 98's and 99's that it is better to have a rear locker.

I think Shott's is playing coy (and chatting way too much) with his posts. Don't sweat it Elijah, better to not respond.

:doh:I totally forgot about that with him. I was thinking there might have been something better to having it without the rear locker. I got sucked in. Carry on.

I want the rear locker because I am assuming that it is better offroad, and therefore far more manly. I have a bit of a complex (my 80 has no lockers ;-). Actually, I have read up a bit more since I posted that, and I now would also look at 2000 (ATRAC), in large part due to your (Schotts) posts. I do want to get a lower cost one though, and I would think that that means older (as in 98, 99). Thanks for all the replies, they are exactly what I was looking for, Dan.
