If you're interested in this, you might check out this one I've been eyeing locally in the Bay Area. I think the price difference would justify the lower miles and the fact that you wouldn't have to drive it across country. Also, on the Virginia one, be sure to check underneath for rust.

1997 Toyota Land Cruiser 40th Anniversary Edition

I'd buy the California one.

What you are proposing really doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
You're going to buy a used up locked 80 and then try to drive it home 3000 miles?
A used up 80 from the East coast, when you live on the West coast?
The West Coast which is the land of mostly rust-free cruisers?

I can see more nightmare scenarios than sweet dreams.

Appreciate perspective folks - thank you. Spoke to dealer this morning - very professional. That said, I'll probably pass but open to east coast folks looking for one

It's probably sold. Was a pretty clean looking, one-owner-vibe 40th Anniv w 188k miles, LOCKERS and intact drivers seat for 10995. I could see one good ding on the driver side rear quarter, but otherwise looked very clean in the pics. Still had the original center caps, which is always a good sign in my experience. Anyhow, theQuaz, welcome here, and I think most the guys on here (myself included) will encourage you to make the most of living in CA, and buy a rig out here that doesn't have underside rust from winter snow and salt. I'll keep you posted if I see anything else w lockers under 10k or close to.

Thanks AZ - appreciate the welcome! And yes, excited to join the community. Any leads will always be appreciated!

Yes for sure buy out there. I'm in the South East. And we end up with a lot snow belt rust buckets. The rest of us envy the clean rust you guys have access to. Be patient the right one will show.

theQuaz, here are two in the Bay. Neither are not perfect, but depending on what you seek, either COULD be a good 80 for the starting price. FYI that I haven't inspected either in person.

STOCKER:
97 Land Cruiser Toyota
(You can definitely find a cleaner ones than this on the interior...but the miles are low, if authentic mileage...and if seller would go down to 5k, it may be a nice starter 80)

NICELY BUILT:
FzJ80 land cruiser E-LOCKERS

Would you mind sharing with me what concerns you had about the one in Virginia? i have been tempted by that one and the main thing holding me back is the mileage.

Thanks,

WJR

Concerns center around mileage and damage to rear - dealers wife basically took out and backed into a bike rack and messed up lift gate- probably needs replacing. And seat motor gears shot. No car fax and he "knows" it runs well bc of experience in the industry ... but no maint records at all scares me. Could end up a full 1FZ-FE rebuild which I don't want to sign up for.

theQuaz, thank you for your reply. Makes sense to me and I agree on your points. Mainly the mileage and the whole back gate issue. I think most of these that are still somewhat original may require some seat work on motors and leather.

Hey can you send any you see my way too? I live in AZ and am looking for a factory locked 80. Preferably clean but for a good deal may buy a fixer upper. Thanks!
