now that the head gasket is done on my 80 it is running very nice. I have gotten the CEL twice since test driving it. I am getting the the P0420 code which leads me to believe that it might be time to replace the cats, O2 sensors and muffler. Maybe this will help the truck run better

I am going to buy the magnaflow y pipe to replace the current stock one.

option one. Buy these two pieces from rock auto to replace the rest of the exhaust.
What do you guys think of these two other parts I found on rock auto? I read that others have used them but no real reviews that I can find.

Option two is to buy the magnaflow y pipe then bring it to an exhaust shop and have them bend up some pipe and replace the rest of the exhaust and add a muffler.

any suggestions welcome. I am going to go ahead and order the magnaflow y pipe. I already have the two O2 sensors
I will hold up on ordering the rock auto stuff for now.

More expensive option, but can you get the y-pipe, and bring it to a place like Henry's to put a custom exhaust on it? Route it above the frame rail and whatnot.

That would be a better way to keep it protected from the rocks and curbs in the parking lot

From I have read. Getting the pipe over the frame is doable which would be great. The problem is the heat on the passenger side floorboard. According to what I read the floor board does get noticeably hotter.

I've come really close to doing what Johnny suggested too. If I replace that Y pipe I'd like to get the exhaust above the frame rail. It routed there on other years so it probably can't be that bad or too hard to add a heat shield.

You can wrap the exhaust too. I bet some of that lizard skin ceramic applied to the floor above the exhaust would take care of it. I might know a guy with some @AJR

Yeah. That’s what the guys on mud suggested. Using some sort of exhaust wrap.

Problem with wrap is that it causes the exhaust to rot out quickly, unless you're using stainless exhaust.

Getting back to factory exhaust replacement, I think @OTRAMM is making FZJ80 exhausts that bolt right in. Might want to drop him a line to see what his prices are, they're probably pretty competitive.

I can confirm that the MagnaFlow Y Pipe works very well. Back circa 2008, when the truck was under my dad's watch, he put a generic Y Pipe on and it was a piece of junk. The shop that installed it then did a custom exhaust route and it has worked nicely. Well, except... They welded a support to the side of the pipe which has broken loose twice (it's now fiber fixed but not leaking - this is not a good solution but it's not unreasonably loud anymore). I also had a magna flow muffler and glass pack resonator installed. The muffler was much better than the Flowmaster - which sounded like a small/modified/Japanese import if you catch my meaning.

Make sure you get the magnaflow y pipe, and not the Bosal one. I believe magnaflow bought bosal a while back, and people had receieved the bosal part (much lower quality piece) when they ordered the magnaflow(at a higher price.

I ordered and received a magnaflow, but was able to put new studs in my o2 sensor mounts, and sold it.

Just ordered the magnaflow y pipe. It will arrive on the 23rd. Going to make an appointment at Henry’s muffler shop. And hopefully they can button up the whole exhaust for me. I really want to get this done before the end of the year run I have planned up.

I will post up more info on how it all works out.

Yeah, I'd say let Henry's set you up an just build a sheetmetal heat shield yourself. LizardSkin is decent, but a heat shield would make a lot bigger difference.

I'd run over the rail a bit and see. I did that to the exhaust in my 80 and the heat on the pass side wasn't noticeable: meaning, wife never complained. And a big +1 to Henry's, after I got sick of working on the EMS exhaust, they fixed it right up and I used the Magnaflow round catalyst which was nice since it didn't protude down and risk getting torn off at the mall.

One quick check you can do, use a shop vac (or similar device full of air) blowing into the tail pipe, then some soapy water to find any leaks. I had the same code, found the gaskets where leaking a bit. Replaced them and new bolts, 0420 has never come back.

Order OEM gaskets exhaust gaskets as well. The magnaflows don’t last long.

2.5” over the frame rail is not bad. The 3” did heat the floor up some but not terrible. No melted carpet.

I think you chose the best path for this one.

EDIT:
Found all 5 gaskets at Hendrix Toyota 5 miles from my house.
Hopefully it don’t take long for them to get them and I can swing by and pick them up. Their online parts site is awesome and makes it so easy to find parts you need. Def going to be buying from them from now on.

I think you need one of each bolted junction of the cats. I ended up using 2 between the cats as a short term bandaid, 3 years and 30k miles ago...

two of these
