I have a 96 FJZ80 bone stock and to make a long story short the guy that sold me the car hid a minor knock in the engine with really heavy oil and about 100 miles later really started knocking and in turn need either a complete rebuild or replacement engine. I found Powertrain Direct online that gets their engines from LKQ with 3 year warranty, does anyone have experience or advice for me?

LKQ is a junkyard company. If they're selling engines with a warranty, you could pull the same engine yourself, or have the yard (apes) do it, buy a warranty and save some money.

Before I did that, I'd make damn sure I needed a new engine. These things are hard to kill. Not impossible, but pretty hard. Even if you need new bearings, that's less than a new (junkyard) engine.

Tried your local clubhouse yet?

My 2¢.

thanks for the advice, I trust the mechanic (as much as you can) he worked for Toyota for 20 years before going out on his own but Powertrain Rebuilds the engines and has the 3 year unlimited mile warranty, plus labor hour.

Does Slee still have these to sell from time to time? They do v-8 swaps, so I got one from them years ago.

Two Questions:
How long do you plan to keep the truck? And what do you want to do with it?

Helped me decide what to do when my engine spun a bearing. I went all in with new short block and complete rebuild cause plan to keep this cruiser until I die and drive to some pretty remote places.

Hhhhmmmm... maybe they could bury me in it?

As a cancer survivor, I think about this type of thing(morbid, I know, but hey, whaddya gonna do?). I don't know how long I will live(probably at least another couple decades if you believe the stats they give you, but I don't see the truck dying the way things are within that time frame at this point and the way I maintain it), but I am guessing it won't be as long as the 80. I don't have any kids and the rest of my family doesn't appreciate the truck in the same way I do. I don't think they understand why I choose to drive a 25 year old car. Most of my friends would probably just run it into the ground. They all know it's worth money, but I have a sense they would just sling it off to the first jackass that showed up with an appealing stack of Benjamins.

It almost seems like there should be a sort of legacy program out there that we could will it to so that we know that it will go to a good home in the event of an untimely demise on the part of an owner :hmm:

I would be curious to hear what others think about that idea. Burying me in it seems selfish and not the life I would want for Dorothy.

You could 'Will' it to the Land Cruiser Heritage Museum. Cdan would take good care of it....and it would live on forever. ;)

Does he really need another 80 to throw on the pile though? I thought about that, but I don't want to just dump it on Dan if they don't really need it for the museum.

At this point, my plan is to keep living, but if that goes to hell, I may just give it to one of you guys. Honestly, after all the help you have given me, you would probably be at the top of the list... :)

haha first off, i love all the comments after this post, its makes me proud to own an LC even if its only been 3 weeks. I am 31 with two kids under two and an avid outdoorsman. I want them to experience the outdoors like I did--with respect and curiosity. I believe this truck will be there to pass down. I think I'm going down the path of a full replacement as it comes with a great warranty and I have a good mechanic that I trust to put in. For me this truck is bone stock, so I can shape it into my exact needs and be proud of it-- I couldn't agree more with owning an older vehicle with such character, theres a pride factor in owning and driving one of these great vehicles, some understand, some don't........

Care to share what you think a full replacement will cost you? I'm looking at a second 80 thats needs a new engine.

Its all over the map honestly-- I have found them for $500 to a couple grand depending on the shape it was in and milage. It also depends if your going to wrench it yourself and everyone I have talked to said to do a full gasket replacement on any used LC engine while you have it out. Also depends on your plans with it--I'm not a huge wheeler but hunt and fish a lot in remote areas to need something dependable. If you look at my thread Engine Help!! there are a couple contacts in there that do used engines and they gave me a lot of different options. Hope this helps.
